PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has directed the leadership of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) to rapidly modernise the country’s defence capabilities, citing increasingly unpredictable global security dynamics, turbulent international relations and far-reaching economic shocks affecting nations worldwide.

Addressing thousands at Rufaro Stadium during the 46th Anniversary of Defence Forces Day today, the Commander-in-Chief outlined a comprehensive vision to realign Zimbabwe’s security architecture.

The 2026 commemorations were held under the theme “Zimbabwe Defence Forces: Guaranteeing Peace and Stability for the Attainment of Vision 2030”.

“Our goal is to safeguard peace, stability and the new national development trajectory through a realigned security architecture that reinforces progress and realisation of Vision 2030,” President Mnangagwa declared.

Embracing AI, cyber security and domestic innovation

The President stressed that in an evolving complex threat landscape, military readiness must go beyond traditional warfare methods.

He urged senior military officers to take the lead in building an innovative defence ecosystem that embraces science, technology and fluid, resource-efficient systems.

Highlighting specific technological priorities, President Mnangagwa called for strengthening dedicated units to anticipate and mitigate the impact of artificial intelligence and cyber threats on national security.

He also called for the commercialisation of ground-breaking student research and military innovations displayed at the Zimbabwe National Defence University (ZNDU) to foster internal defence self-reliance.

Food security and community development
The Head of State commended the armed forces for contributing directly to socio-economic growth and national food security through production on military institutional farms.

He challenged the forces to expand beyond basic production into agro-processing ventures and high-value agricultural exports.

Highlighting the ZDF’s civil-military projects, the President commended ongoing infrastructure development, including the construction of schools and health facilities in Rushinga, Buhera, Gokwe, Mutasa North and Harare, as well as medical outreach missions conducted with the Ministry of Health and Child Care.

On disaster response and internal security, the President lauded the military for precision search-and-rescue operations during natural disasters in Masvingo and Midlands Provinces, as well as joint border control operations with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) along borders with South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Mozambique.

Landmine clearance and international diplomacy

President Mnangagwa highlighted ongoing efforts to clear residual landmines planted during the liberation struggle, which continue to render large tracts of land economically inactive.

He thanked international development partners — including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), HALO Trust and Mines Advisory Group (MAG) — for assisting the ZDF National Mine Clearance Unit towards achieving a mine-free status under the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Treaty.

On international relations, the President reaffirmed Zimbabwe’s diplomatic stance of being “a friend to all and enemy to none”.

He described Zimbabwe’s election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term as a global tribute to its commitment to peace.
He also commended the Air Force of Zimbabwe for its participation in the regional SADC Exercise Blue Lugwashu in Zambia, announcing that Zimbabwe will host the next edition of the military exercise in 2027.

Commitment to troops’ welfare

Concluding his address, President Mnangagwa assured members of the armed forces that his administration remains committed to improving their welfare and service conditions.

This includes expanding housing and institutional infrastructure in cantonment areas and integrating renewable energy technologies to ensure stable power across military establishments.

“Officers, men and women of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, the nation is proud of you,” President Mnangagwa concluded.

“Sustain the momentum and keep up the good work that has earned you the status of a dependable, professional and highly reputable force.”

Every blood-stained dollar gleefully accepted from politically connected tenderpreneurs represents a sick child denied medication, a school without books, and a community deprived of clean water.

As a devout Christian, this is not a abstract debate or a political talking point. 
It is a deeply personal, heartbreaking crisis of faith. 
There is nothing more sickening than watching those who claim to shepherd God’s flock desecrate His holy name to line their own pockets. 
The growing trend of church leaders eagerly accepting lavish “donations” from figures whose reputations are deeply entangled in corruption allegations is an indictment of the modern Zimbabwean pulpit.
The most visible face of this culture is convicted fraudster and tenderpreneur Wicknell Chivayo, who dishes out millions of dollars and luxury fleets like confetti at a wedding. 
Over the past few years, the public has watched in utter disbelief as Christian figures gracefully receive these gifts. 
From ZCC’s Nehemiah Mutendi and leaders across various apostolic sects to prominent gospel musicians, the queue for questionable generosity keeps growing. 
Most recently, UFIC’s self-appointed “prophet” Emmanuel Makandiwa accepted a million dollars.
How does any self-respecting believer who claims to worship and fear God accept funds that are, in all likelihood, the proceeds of crime?
These politically-connected tenderpreneurs do not generate wealth through innovation or productive enterprise. 
They secure multi-million-dollar public contracts through dubious means. 
Look no further than the infamous Gwanda Solar Power Plant Project, where millions exchanged hands while not a single watt of power was produced for a country plunging into darkness. 
Consider the R800 million (roughly US$42 million) flagged by South African financial authorities—deposited into business accounts linked to Chivayo from Ren-Form CC right after the company received R1.1 billion from Zimbabwe’s Treasury for vastly inflated election material. 
No convincing explanation was ever offered for why that money moved the way it did.
These are merely the scandals that surfaced because investigative journalists and cross-border regulatory authorities pulled back the curtain. 
One is left to wonder what else remains hidden in the shadows.
What other millions are changing hands under dubious circumstances behind closed doors?
These are not harmless financial games. 
Every single dollar handed over in a velvet bag or parked as a luxury vehicle in a pastor’s driveway is money stripped directly from public hospitals. 
It is money that should have purchased lifesaving medication and functional equipment for dying citizens. 
It is money missing from primary schools where children sit on cold concrete floors without textbooks or science kits. 
It is money stolen from road infrastructure, leaving highways resembling hazardous war zones, and from municipal water systems in cities where urban homes have gone years without a drop of clean running water.
Worst of all, these tenderpreneurs make no pretense of repentance. 
They do not come to the altar confessing their misdeeds or seeking restitution. 
Instead, they position themselves as benevolent philanthropists, preening before congregation cameras while distributing plunder.
Scripture offers a clear contrast in the story of Zacchaeus. 
When the tax collector encountered Jesus Christ and realized the error of his corrupt ways, his repentance was immediate and costly. 
He pledged to give half his possessions to the poor and return fourfold to anyone he had cheated. 
Crucially, Zacchaeus did not hand that stolen money to Jesus, nor did Jesus demand a cut for the ministry. 
The restitution went straight back to the prejudiced public.
Can anyone imagine Zacchaeus taking his ill-gotten wealth to purchase golden chariots and thoroughbred horses for Jesus—and Jesus smiling, taking the reins, and praising his righteousness? 
That would have been an utter outrage. 
It would have destroyed the moral authority of Christ.
Jesus would not have been the Christ we revere and worship today.
Besides, these churches are not even giving that money back to the people of Zimbabwe—perhaps by donating all of it to various hospitals and schools. 
The money is being kept by these churches, and the luxury cars are being driven by the leaders.
The ultimate casualty in this toxic arrangement is Christ Himself. 
His image is being systematically dragged through the dirt by the insatiable greed of self-serving leaders. 
To the outside world, Christians are now viewed as self-righteous hypocrites who preach morality on Sunday but compromise for thirty pieces of silver on Monday. 
In doing so, unfortunately, we are more akin to Judas Iscariot than our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 
We actually push more people away from Jesus than towards Him.
It is a real shame. 
Unless we introspect on who we have truly become as Christians, we are no better than the people we love to preach to and call “sinners.” 
If anything, those supposed “sinners” are better than us—because they never pretend to be who they are not.

When scandals break in the public eye, the script is as predictable as it is insulting. 
After explicit footage leaked online featuring Johannesburg influencer Matshidiso Shai and popular dancer Limpopo Boy, it immediately sent shockwaves across social media platforms.

In response, an official statement dated 10 August 2026 was released on her letterhead, addressed directly to her husband, Kevin Shai, as well as her family, friends, and supporters. 

The letter checked every standard crisis-management box: unreserved apologies, promises to “do the work to rebuild trust,” and an appeal for grace wrapped in the familiar refrain that she is simply human and had “made a mistake.”
A public figure or private individual is exposed in a calculated act of betrayal, and within hours, a polished statement is released to sanitize the damage. 
Standard public relations rhetoric takes over: “I made a mistake,” “I am human,” and “I ask for grace as I grow.”
Yet, when applied to infidelity—especially infidelity that requires active planning, deceit, and the audacious documentation of the act itself—the word “mistake” is not an admission of guilt. 
It is a calculated evasion of responsibility.
A mistake is spilling coffee on a tablecloth. 
A mistake is miscalculating a turn on a highway or misinterpreting a financial ledger. 
These are unintentional lapses in attention or judgment where the outcome was never desired. 
Infidelity, by contrast, is a sequence of deliberate, conscious choices. 
It requires time. 
It requires coordination. 
It requires active cover-ups, lied-about locations, ignored consciences, and the systematic dismantling of trust built over years or decades.
To take off a wedding ring, arrange a secret rendezvous, engage in an intimate betrayal, and perhaps even hold up a camera to record the entire encounter is not a momentary lapse. 
It is a project. 
Every step along that path provides a clear opportunity to stop, reflect, and turn back. 
Choosing to proceed at every single junction transforms the act from a lapse into a choice. 
Calling it a “mistake” after the trap springs is simply a desperate attempt to reset the narrative.
Trivializing wrongdoing through softened language reveals a profound lack of genuine remorse. 
True remorse requires staring directly into the magnitude of the harm caused, acknowledging the agency behind the destruction, and accepting the full weight of the blame. 
Remorse says, “I chose my own gratification over your dignity, and I knowingly lied to protect myself.”
When an offender instead reaches for the shield of “I’m only human,” they are not seeking forgiveness; they are demanding immunity. 
They are attempting to shift the focus from the deliberate injury inflicted on an innocent partner to their own fragile humanity. 
It signals to the victim and the public that the perpetrator views their betrayal not as a moral failure or a violation of a sacred covenant, but as an unfortunate blunder—a minor detour on their personal journey of “learning and growth.”
This linguistic softening is a insult added to injury. 
It asks the betrayed spouse not only to endure the crushing humiliation of the act itself, but also to accept a distorted reality where their pain was caused by an accident rather than a decision. 
It forces the victim to play along with the delusion that the person who systematically lied to them merely “stumbled.”
Furthermore, the audacity required to record such encounters exposes the ultimate flaw in the “mistake” narrative. 
Recording a sexual betrayal requires a level of composure, detachment, and entitlement that completely destroys any claim of being swept away by unthinking passion. 
It demonstrates that even in the midst of the act, the individual was fully aware, fully present, and actively documenting the violation. 
It transforms a private betrayal into permanent evidence, compounding the humiliation should it ever come to light.
Societies and relationships cannot rebuild trust on a foundation of sanitized vocabulary. 
Rebuilding requires accountability, and accountability begins with precision of language. 
Infidelity is not an error in calculation; it is a breach of contract, a violation of consent, and a deliberate betrayal of faith.
Until individuals who commit these acts drop the defensive PR scripts and stop hiding behind the convenient shield of human imperfection, their apologies remain hollow. 
You cannot fix a problem you refuse to name accurately. 
As long as deliberate cruelty and calculated deception are repackaged as mere “mistakes,” the apology is not an act of humility—it is simply the final lie in a long chain of deceit.
And until the truth is faced without excuses, it is only a matter of time before it happens again.
