ZANU PF is now pursuing economic development after it got a resounding mandate in last year’s harmonised elections, the ruling party’s chairperson, Cde Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri (pictured), has said.

She made the remarks while addressing a campaign rally for ZANU PF’s candidate for Seke National Assembly seat Cde Munyaradzi Kashambe in Dema yesterday ahead of the February 3 by-elections.

“You have been a resilient people and stood with ZANU PF in all these years despite sanctions that were imposed on our Government. And since President Mnangagwa came into power, we have witnessed tremendous development across all sectors. As ZANU PF, this is to show you that it’s time to pursue development. We have political power in the bag and this is now the time to champion economic development,” she said.

Cde Muchinguri-Kashiri highlighted some of the developments undertaken by the Second Republic, saying Seke Constituency has also benefitted from Government projects.

“Here in Seke, there are eight transformers. This will enhance access to electricity for you in this area. The ZANU PF Government is not stopping in promoting development and we will leave no one and no place behind, as the President always says.

“We therefore thank the President for giving this constituency eight transformers through Zesa. There are also 20 computers that were given to this area, among many other initiatives to improve people’s lives.”

She also took time to commission a solarised borehole that was drilled under the Presidential Borehole Scheme at a Methodist church in Dema.

While opposition-run local authorities have failed the people, she said, Government will step in to assist them, in the same way it has provided boreholes to ordinary people countrywide through the Presidential Borehole Scheme.

“Everyone in the country has the right to clean water; that is why the President launched the borehole scheme where he wants to drill 35 000 boreholes across the country in each village.

“There will be a garden and a fence, and that community garden will be registered as a company to benefit the people,” she said.

She also delivered 30 tonnes of mealie meal to the constituency, which she said was a special donation to them from President Mnangagwa.

One of the contractors who are drilling the boreholes, Prevail International Group, said they will work tirelessly to fast-track the establishment of Presidential boreholes in Harare and Bulawayo.

Prevail International Group managing director Mr Paul Tungwarara said they have procured sufficient materials to drill all boreholes required nationwide under the programme.

“In Harare alone, we have drilled over 200 boreholes since we were contracted for the Presidential Borehole Scheme. We are continuing with the programme and have secured all materials to continue to meet the demand. People assumed that this programme would be for rural provinces only, but we are also doing our work here in Harare and also in Bulawayo.”

THE relocation of Dema tollgate has come as a relief for the local farming community and is creating employment opportunities for the youths in the area, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona has said.

Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony of the new tollgate site last week, Minister Mhona said Government had heeded concerns by the Dema and Seke communities and resolved to relocate the tollgate.

“This is a farming community and some were indeed being affected by this tollgate daily,” said Minister Mhona.

“I am happy that wherever we do projects, we also employ youths from the local community and here we are looking at employment of 30 to 40 people who will be working at this tollgate. This is going to transform their lives and the community as well. Apart from the relocation and upgrade of the tollgate to a toll plaza, we are also refurbishing roads in this area linking Chitungwiza and Makoni and proceed to 10 Miles Road from Hwedza.

“The money that we are using for all these projects is being mobilised locally from our tollgates and the construction of this toll plaza would be done in-house by a Government parastatal. We don’t have anyone that we should wait for to come and develop our country.”

The Government, Minister Mhona said, was refurbishing and reconstructing roads to facilitate business and make it convenient for travellers. He, however, expressed concern over motorists who disregard road traffic rules.

“You will see that as we move forward, we are going be accompanied by the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe and Zinara (Zimbabwe National Road Administration) educating people about the importance of good driving.”

Some are driving after drinking alcohol and we now want to introduce breathalysers and cameras working together with the Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Vehicle Inspection Directorate.”

Transport and Infrastructural Development Deputy Minister Cde Joshua Sacco highlighted the importance of unity of purpose when undertaking major projects, while Chief Seke applauded the Second Republic, led by President Mnangagwa, for heeding the call by the Dema community to relocate the tollgate.

This comes at a time when Zinara has confirmed that it has enough resources to implement the construction of toll plazas across the country and roll out the e-tolling project as soon as the procurement processes have been completed.

The groundbreaking ceremony was also attended by the several business executives, local leadership and representatives of various parastatals under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development.

ZIMBABWEANS must take an active role in ensuring a clean environment as it is integral to their general well-being and the country’s socio-economic growth and development, Vice President Kembo Mohadi has said.

Speaking during a clean-up programme organised by Prophet Walter Magaya’s Prophetic, Healing and Deliverance (PHD) Ministries at Robert Mugabe Square in Harare yesterday, VP Mohadi said clean-up programmes should become part of Zimbabwe’s culture.

An unhealthy and unhygienic environment, he said, breeds a “sick nation”, which is costly to manage.

“A sick nation takes away resources that were meant to prosper an economy to the importation of medication. It diverts a nation’s focus from the critical issues about our development to crisis management. You are reduced to being reactive to a menace as is currently the situation with cholera in at least the whole of SADC,” he said.

Zimbabweans, he added, should take it upon themselves to create the future they want.

“Let me take this opportunity to appreciate and commend everyone participating in this clean-up. Your leadership appreciates your efforts. It is my wish that what you have done today becomes a national culture. It should not start and end with today’s clean-up. Our gathering here is indicative of togetherness towards the management of waste. It takes us as Zimbabweans to create the future we want.”

He said there was need to adopt effective waste management systems that support the environment as well as the economy.

“Our clean-up goal is the reduction of waste in our environment. This can only be achieved through adopting and adapting effective waste management systems that include elements such as recovery and recycling, among other strategies.

“Effective waste recovery for recycling is a foundation for a functional economy. The implementation of best environmental practices unlocks the full potential for a greener future.”

He also said community participation in cleaning the environment remains central to people’s general well-being and development.

“To that end, I once again commend PHD Ministries for taking the initiative in organising this clean-up exercise. I also wish to urge Zimbabweans across all sectors, churches, businesses and whatever rank and position you might have in life, to follow this example that has been set by Prophet Magaya.”

VP Mohadi commended formal and informal waste collectors for the effort they put in recycling waste.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere; Environment, Climate and Wildlife Minister Mangaliso Ndlovu; Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Harare Metropolitan Province Senator Charles Tavengwa; senior Government officials; Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume and city council officials, as well as diplomats, attended the event.
