PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has paid tribute to the late former Vice-President Cde Joseph Wilfred Msika, who died on August 4, 2009, describing him as a selfless nationalist, liberation war stalwart and champion of social justice whose legacy continues to inspire Zimbabwe’s march towards Vision 2030.

In a commemorative message marking the 17th anniversary of Cde Msika’s death, President Mnangagwa called upon Zimbabweans at home and abroad to reflect on the late national hero’s enduring contribution to the liberation struggle, nation-building and socio-economic transformation.

He said the nation joins the Msika family in commemorating the life of a leader who served as Vice-President of Zimbabwe from 1999 to 2009 after dedicating his life to the country’s liberation and development.

President Mnangagwa said the late Msika committed himself wholeheartedly to the liberation of Zimbabwe through nationalist politics and the protracted armed struggle, enduring lengthy periods of incarceration, including detention at Gonakudzingwa, in pursuit of freedom from colonial rule.

He said after Independence in 1980, the late Vice-President remained steadfast in advancing social justice, empowerment and equitable development, particularly through his unwavering support for the Land Reform Programme aimed at uplifting the previously disadvantaged black majority.

President Mnangagwa noted that the commemoration falls during the month when Zimbabwe observes Heroes Day and Defence Forces Day, making it an appropriate time for citizens to honour the sacrifices of liberation icons.

He said Cde Msika embodied the values of struggle, sacrifice and dedicated service to the nation, adding that together with other liberation luminaries, his generation secured the country’s independence and sovereignty for future generations.

President Mnangagwa said the freedom and statehood bequeathed by Cde Msika and his contemporaries remain the greatest inheritance passed on to Zimbabweans, urging citizens to safeguard and build upon that legacy.

He said as the country enters the final stretch of implementing the National Development Strategy and advances towards attaining Vision 2030, Zimbabweans should continue to uphold the principles that defined Cde Msika’s life.

“We continue to uphold the noble values of sacrifice, patriotism, freedom, unity, love and tolerance which Cde Msika espoused,” he said.

President Mnangagwa noted that the late Vice-President and other departed national heroes had sacrificed much for the country and expressed hope that their souls would rest in eternal peace.

He urged Zimbabweans to remain united in preserving the ideals for which these distinguished heroes fought.

“During this month of August when we commemorate the 46th Heroes Day, and celebrate the Defence Forces Day, it is only befitting that Zimbabweans at home and in the diaspora take time to reflect on the life of struggle, sacrifice and service, which the late Vice President Joseph Msika personified.

“Alongside his peers and luminaries of our National Struggle, the late Vice President and his generation bequeathed freedom and statehood to us as a people, itself the priceless gift a generation can ever win and pass on,” said President Mnangagwa.

“As the National Development Strategy enters its final stretch, with our Nation resolutely marching towards the attainment of Vision 2030, we continue to uphold the noble values of sacrifice, patriotism, freedom, unity, love and tolerance which Cde Msika espoused.”

Zimbabwe is on course to achieve Vision 2030, to become an upper-middle-class economy — a status that many of the country’s heroes and heroines sacrificed for as they fought to dislodge the racist Rhodesian regime, which excluded the black majority from key sectors of the economy and treated blacks as second-class citizens.

A bold and fearless nationalist, the Cde Msika embodied that fight not just for racial emancipation, but for the economic inclusion of all Zimbabweans.

“May the soul of the late Vice President, Cde Joseph Wilfred Msika, and indeed the souls of other worthy sons and daughters of this Land, rest in eternal peace,” said the President.

Following the death of Vice-President Joshua Nkomo in 1999, Cde Msika was appointed to succeed him. He served as the Second Vice-President of Zimbabwe from December 23, 1999 until his death on August 4, 2009. At the party level, he also served as Zanu-PF’s Vice President and Second Secretary.

As Vice President, he devoted his energies to supporting the Land Reform Programme, which sought to restore land to its rightful owners. President Mnangagwa noted that Cde Msika was a man of unwavering principles who served Zimbabweans selflessly before and after Independence.

Born on December 6, 1923, Cde Msika died on August 4, 2009, at West End Hospital in Harare at the age of 85. He was laid to rest at the National Heroes Acre on National Heroes Day, August 10, 2009.

Zimbabwe will be commemorating its Heroes Day on August 10. President Mnangagwa will preside over the main event that will be held at the National Heroes Acre in Harare, with parallel commemorations at 10 Provincial Heroes

Acres and 60 District Heroes Acres across the country.

A total of 50 000 heroes, 5 000 from each province, will be honoured this year on the Day that will be commemorated under the theme: “Lest We Forget.”

The theme honours the sacrifices made by Zimbabwe’s liberation fighters in securing the country’s independence from colonial rule and encourages citizens to preserve the history of the liberation struggle.

As darkness fell over Bulawayo yesterday evening, a solemn convoy of hearses and vehicles carrying the bodies of a mother and her daughters wound slowly through the city, ending a month-long vigil for a family desperate to bring their loved ones home.

Zandile Nothabo Khumalo, 42, and her daughters — Natalie, 15, and Nala, 5 — were discovered dead at their home in Great Denham, Bedfordshire, on July 6. Post-mortem examinations confirmed that all three died from blunt force trauma.

The husband and father, Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma, a Zimbabwean-born British citizen, fled the United Kingdom following the deaths. He was arrested on July 10 in Kensington, Johannesburg, during a joint operation by the South African Police Service and Interpol.

Tshuma, who is in custody in South Africa, faces a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm. The United Kingdom has authorised three counts of murder against him and is seeking his extradition to stand trial.

At the Ntabazinduna tollgate, grief-stricken relatives gathered to receive the bodies at 5:40 PM. From there, the convoy made its way along Harare Road, turned onto George Avenue, then 23rd Avenue, and onto Plumtree Road before finally turning into Siyephambili Drive and arriving at Nyaradzo Funeral Parlour in Tshabalala suburb.

Along the route, pedestrians paused to watch, and motorists slowed down as word spread that the three had finally returned to Bulawayo.

The bodies had earlier arrived at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare before being transported by road to Bulawayo after a weather-related delay disrupted their journey from the United Kingdom over the weekend.

At the Ntabazinduna tollgate, emotions ran high as relatives welcomed the convoy carrying their loved ones.

This was the first time that the family had seen their loved ones since the tragedy and the reality struck that indeed they were gone.

Family members had gradually trickled in at the tollgate, arriving vehicle by vehicle before parking along the roadside to await the convoy. For many, it was the first time they had physically accompanied their loved ones since the tragedy, making the painful reality of their loss impossible to escape.

A lead car from Nyaradzo Funeral Parlour came from their Bulawayo office to guide the three hearses to the mortuary where they lay in state ahead of today’s burial.

Some family members could not hold back their tears as they prepared to accompany the hearses on the final stretch of the journey into the city.

When the convoy finally arrived at Nyaradzo Funeral Parlour in Tshabalala, relatives who had been waiting quietly walked towards one another, exchanging embraces as tears flowed freely. Others remained silent, finding comfort in each other’s presence after weeks of waiting to bring Nothabo and her daughters home.

A Nyaradzo Funeral Services official thanked the family for coming and assured them that all arrangements for the funeral remained on course.

The official said the programme for today had not changed. The bodies will leave Nyaradzo Funeral Parlour today at 7AM before making a brief stop at the Khumalo family home in Gwabalanda.

From there, the cortege will proceed to Brethren in Christ Church in New Lobengula for a funeral service before Nothabo and her daughters are laid to rest side by side at Old Luveve Cemetery.

The Khumalo family was asked to stay behind to make final logistical arrangements, while friends and the rest of the family were milling around, still consoling each other.

In Gwabalanda suburb, the community gathered for a night vigil as they continued to support the Khumalo family during the final leg of the burial journey.

The successful repatriation of the three has brought a measure of comfort to the Khumalo family, who had previously expressed relief that Natalie and Nala, who were born in the United Kingdom, would be buried alongside their mother in Zimbabwe.

KAROI, Aug. 3 (NewsDay Live) – Zanu PF Hurungwe East legislator Chenjerai Kangausaru has been acquitted of charges of defeating or obstructing the course of justice after a Karoi magistrate ruled that the State had failed to prove its case.

Magistrate Edwin Marecha discharged Kangausaru at the close of the State case, finding that prosecutors had not produced sufficient evidence to establish the offence beyond reasonable doubt.

Kangausaru had been charged under Section 184 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act. Prosecutors alleged that on January 5, 2022, he submitted two fraudulent offer letters for Subdivision 1 of Chitongo Farm in Karoi, purportedly signed by the then Minister of Lands, in an attempt to mislead the court in civil case C/509/23.

In a judgment delivered on July 22, 2026, Marecha said the prosecution’s case failed because it did not call a competent witness from the Ministry of Lands to authenticate or challenge the documents.

“With no evidence from the relevant Ministry regarding the origin and genuineness of the documents tendered by the accused, one is left to wonder the legal basis for bringing a witness who had no capacity to represent the Ministry,” Marecha ruled.

The court heard evidence from only one State witness, Vincent Tendai, who is the opposing party in the civil dispute. A second witness, Fidel Muzorewa of the Ministry of Lands, was not called after the ministry reportedly declined to authorise him to testify despite several postponements since May 2023.

According to the ruling, the ministry, through its legal officer Garisa, distanced itself from Muzorewa, rendering any intended testimony inadmissible.

“In the absence of an official representative of the Ministry… there is no way that the genuineness or otherwise of the documents tendered will be established,” Marecha said.

The magistrate also found no evidence that Kangausaru’s actions had defeated or obstructed the administration of justice.

“There was no evidence so far… that the judicial proceedings under case C/509/23 were defeated or obstructed,” the court ruled.

Applying the test under Section 198(3) of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act, Marecha concluded that there was no basis on which a reasonable court could convict.

“I cannot say safely that this court could, acting carefully, convict the accused person on the basis of the evidence adduced so far,” she said.

Kangausaru, who was represented by Samuel Muyemeki of Mapaya Legal Practitioners, maintained that he believed the offer letters were genuine and denied any intention to interfere with the civil proceedings.

The acquittal brings to an end more than three years of criminal proceedings arising from the disputed land documents.
