LISTED mining group, RioZim posted a loss of $77,4 million during the half year period ended June 2020 from a profit of $38,2 million prior year weighed down by low gold production and rising costs of production, the company’s financials reveal.

The group recorded low production volumes of gold which plunged to 586kg compared to the 962kg achieved in the comparative prior period.

The low volumes were attributed to, among other challenges, acute power cuts which resulted in depressed milling throughput, persistent mill breakdowns and lower grade ore from One Step Mine.

Resultantly, the group’s revenue was subdued at $616,4 million.

The low volumes were, however, partly offset by the favourable gold price which averaged US$1,713/oz; an increase of 27% from US$1,346/oz realised in the same prior period.
“The combined effect of low production attainment coupled with rising production costs, however, weighed down the company’s performance closing the period with a loss of $77,4 million, a decline compared to a profit of $38,2 million realised in the same prior period,” said the company’s chairman Saleem Rashid Beebeejaun in a statement accompanying the results.
The group’s Renco Mine produced 288kg, an 11% increase from the 259kg achieved in H1 2019.

The increase in production is mainly attributable to improved plant availability as the plant breakdowns experienced in the comparative period were resolved. Cam and Motor Mine produced a total of 199kg compared to 489kg recorded in the prior period.

Plant and machinery breakdowns negatively impacted throughput and gold output.

“To address the equipment challenges, the company is in the process of implement various capacitation activities which include repairs, rehabilitation and replacement of components to enable the plant to achieve installed capacity. The future of the mine remains hinged on the completion of the BIOX project in order to access higher grade ore at the Cam pits than is currently being processed from One Step Mine,” he said.

The company said the BIOX plant project was brought to a complete halt due to COVID-19 as all of the equipment manufacturers in South Africa and local contractors stopped operations in compliance with lockdown regulations. Funding initiatives that were being pursued by the group were dampened as financiers took a conservative approach in the face of low visibility and an uncertain future because of the pandemic.

The group’s Dalny Mine produced 99kg during the period under review, which is lower than the 215kg attained in the prior period.

There were significant equipment challenges experienced in both the mining and plant processing sections of the mine which are being rectified.
Power supply challenges experienced during the period also hampered production performance.

“Empress Nickel Refinery (ENR) remained under care and maintenance during the review period. In the first quarter ENR focused on furnace relining and accumulating feed material for matte production.”

The group’s Murowa Diamonds produced 250kcts compared to 390kcts in the comparative prior period.

As a result, the group posted a loss of $5,3 million. The decline in production was due to a decrease in the ore grade as the mine extracted ore from a lower grade pit.Given the decrease in ore grade, the company is working on expanding processing capacity to shift the operations to a low grade, high volume model. This project has stalled due to insufficient foreign currency and unavailability of funding to fast track the completion of the project.

THE International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) has set aside tomorrow, September 23, for global mass protests in solidarity with the poorly-paid Zimbabwean workers.

In a statement, Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) secretary-general Japhet Moyo said affiliates of the ITUC would picket at Zimbabwean embassies throughout the world demanding decent salaries for local workers whose incomes have been eroded by runaway inflation hovering around 700%.

“The International Trade Union Confederation has called on its affiliates to take action against the Zimbabwean government that includes protests at Zimbabwe embassies, sending letters of protest and social media campaigns to highlight the plight of Zimbabwe workers, the non-respects of rights and the demand for a better wages,” Moyo said.

Workers are demanding salaries above the poverty datum line or alternatively reverting to 2018 salary levels which should be paid in the more stable United States dollar.
ZCTU is also calling on the government to stop corruption and abduction and harassment of trade unionists, among other demands.

The ITUC planned protests come after two teachers’ unions declared that their members would boycott classes when schools reopen for examination classes next Tuesday following a deadlock in salary talks with government last week.

Nurses recently ended their three-month strike over poor salaries in order to pave way for negotiations.

In addition to their inflation-ravaged salaries, civil servants are being paid a non-taxable US$75 COVID-19 allowance which they dismiss as inadequate.

ZIMBABWE’S milk production declined by 3% to 37,88 million litres in the first half of this year, a latest report by the Livestock and Meat Advisory Council (Lmac) reveals.

In its report, Lmac said milk production for the period January to June 2020 amounted to 37,88 million litres compared to 39,25 million litres collected in the same period last year.

“January milk collections were the highest for the period at 6,83 million litres, with June the second highest at 6,53 million litres. This is the second highest quantity of milk collected for the first half of the year since 2013, but also the first year-on-year decrease since 2013,” it said.

“Milk collection appears to have been less affected by COVID-19 movement restrictions than other livestock sectors.”

Zimbabwe is importing about 30 million litres of milk from South Africa to supplement local supplies.

Annually, the southern African nation requires at least 120 million litres of milk.

Dairy farmers are struggling to meet national demand due to challenges affecting their sector such as stockfeed shortages, high cost of drugs and chemicals.

Some of their requirements, according to the Zimbabwe Association of Dairy Farmers, include foreign currency, vaccines, cleaning detergents, semen for artificial insemination and equipment.

Dairy farmers are also struggling to access funding from banks because of the punitive interest rates on loans availed to them.

Due to these challenges, milk production levels have dramatically plummeted from the early 1990s peak of 260 million litres per year to 79,90 million litres, which was achieved in 2019.
In 2018, milk production stood at 75,33 million.

To help increase milk production by between 97 million and 100 million litres per annum, the government, in partnership with We Effect Zimbabwe and other partners, last year launched a four-year dairy revival project worth about US$8 million.

Together with the European Union, the government recently launched a US$45 million Zimbabwe agricultural growth programme fund which is expected to boost the livestock sector, maximise smallholder farmers’ profits and improve competitiveness on the domestic and international markets.
