CHINA yesterday officially handed over the new Parliament building in Mt Hampden to Zimbabwe.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, President Emmerson Mnangagwa pledged to continue working together with China and its Communist Party of China to enhance economic ties between the two nations.

The US$100 million building, funded by the Chinese government through ChinaAid, consists of the National Assembly that can accommodate 350 Members of Parliament, while the Senate has 100 seats.

“Our Zanu PF government stands ready to strengthen strategic synergies and to share experiences with the People’s Republic of China and the Communist Party of China with regards to advancing rejuvenation and growing our economy,” Mnangagwa said.

“We look forward to practical cooperation in the pillars of agriculture modernisation, industrialisation, talent and skills development.”

The President said the new building will provide a more peaceful environment for parliamentarians to execute their legislative role.

“The New Parliament building, which stands as one of the most magnificent and modern buildings in our country, signifies the excellent relations which exist between Zimbabwe and the People’s Republic of China,” he said.

“The attention to detail and high standards of workmanship exhibited in this project are, indeed, commendable.

“This magnificent building is a transformational development from the congestion challenges that were being experienced in the previous parliament building,” he said.

“The spacious multi-purpose committee rooms, with the accompanying state-of-the-art technology in this building enable the legislature to meet, discuss and implement parliamentary programmes in line with the evolving needs and expectations of law making in this 21st century.”

Work on the project commenced in November 2018 and the building was completed in June last year.

A CHINESE national appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court yesterday for attempting to illegally traffick three 17-year-old girls to his country into forced marriages.

Chen Dehu (39), a Chinese national, Joseph Rabson (44) and Shame Mafido (57) appeared before magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa who remanded them to today for bail ruling.

The trio were charged with contravening the Trafficking in Persons Act.

Chen, who is married to Rabson’s child, arrived in Zimbabwe on October 3 this year allegedly to traffick unsuspecting victims to China.

It is alleged that Chen connived with Rabson and Mafido and recruited three victims after promising them fake education scholarships and jobs.

The State heard that Rabson and Mafido are close relatives to the victims.

It is alleged that on October 18, 2023, the trio transported the three victims from Karoi to Harare and booked a room for them at 27 Hillview Lodge, where they stayed for four days awaiting the processing of their travel documents.

The State heard that the accused persons fraudulently acquired new birth certificates to alter their ages from 17 to 20 years.

Detectives from CID Counter Terrorism Unit arrested the three at the lodge  after receiving a tip-off that there were minors harboured at the property.

A PLUMTREE boy (15) died after he was bashed by three suspects as punishment for allegedly raping a teenage girl.

The boy was severely assaulted and later complained of hunger before his death.

The matter came to light at the Plumtree Magistrates Courts on Wednesday where Ishel Nkiwane, Angel Gugulethu Sidusi and another 15-year-old girl who cannot be named for ethical reasons appeared before magistrate Joshua Nembaware.

The trio was appearing in court for routine remand and Nembaware remanded them out of custody to January 16 next year.

Prosecutor Voster Makuwerere alleged that on June 27, the boy entered the victim’s room and raped her.

He reportedly fled from the scene but was identified by neighbours who teamed up and effected a citizen’s arrest.

The trio reportedly took turns to assault him before taking him to their house after he complained of hunger.

The court also heard that they fed him with sadza and water while assaulting him with rubber switches and open hands.

The boy reportedly collapsed and died on the spot, leading to the arrest of the trio.
