AT least six households in Gweru are benefitting from an urban resilience building project spearheaded by a German non-governmental organisation, Welthungerhilfe (WHH).

Speaking at a field day, WHH spokesperson Kudzai Mpangi said the humanitarian organisation was allocated one hectare at the local authority’s Go Beer Farm to undertake horticultural projects.

“So far the farm is benefitting six households and currently they have grown cabbages, peas and maize. The project has been implemented as a response to various shocks and challenges including climate change, drought, crop failure, floods and importantly the impact of COVID-19,” Mpangi said.

She said WHH provided agriculture infrastructure worth US$39 421 to assist 32 beneficiaries in various self-help projects.

One of the beneficiaries Annie Makurenje, said the project had helped them in alleviating food security challenges and to raise income for their families.

“The project has seen some of us developing from vendors and backyard farmers to engage in farming that has positively changed our livelihoods,” she said.

The WHH urban resilience project is targeting 1 500 households from the city’s seven wards as the organisation seeks to mitigate rising poverty levels in the country’s urban areas.

According to the World Food Organisation, more than two million urban dwellers in Zimbabwe need food assistance.

BULAWAYO City Council has issued tickets worth US$6 000 for environmental offences since August, but only US$1 376,34 has been collected, according to latest council minutes.

Housing and community services director Dictor Khumalo expressed concern over environmental degradation in Greater Bulawayo and water catchment areas.

“Twenty-eight illegal gold panners were arrested and handed to Esigodini courts. During these patrols, 101 tools were confisticated and handed over to Esigodini police as exhibits,” the minutes read.

The council is having challenges with gold panners and sand poachers within council’s jurisdiction and around its water catchment areas in Umzingwane, Matabeleland South province.

Gold panners have in the past been blamed for the massive pollution and siltation of council water sources.

“A total of 22 tickets were issued to the offenders for various offences and 17 tickets have been paid, hence a sum of US$856,34 was realised. A total of five tickets were still outstanding with a total of US$6 335,31. A total of  three trucks were recorded at two pit sand sites and a total of US$520 was realised,” the minutes read.

In July, US$2 930 was collected in fines.

“The total number of arrests (for environmental violations) since January 2023 is 103. A total of 236 tools including four detector machines were confiscated and handed over to Esigodini police as exhibits,” the council said.

A JOINT agricultural project between the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) and Bulawayo-based war veteran Phathakahle Dube has failed to take off for the past 20 years.

Dube, who owns PKD Malindi (Pvt) Limited company, signed a joint venture agreement with NRZ in June 2003 to engage in farming activities at plot 5 Woolandale Estate in Khami, Bulawayo. However, the project suffered a stillbirth after the property was invaded by 53 illegal settlers.

The plot belongs to NRZ and its late general manager Mike Karakadzai had okayed the deal which has since left Dube in a quandary, shuffling from one office to the next seeking assistance, with little success.

Yesterday, Dube said he was frustrated by the lack of progress in evicting the invaders in order to allow the project to commence

In September 2018, Dube  and the NRZ were granted an eviction order to remove the illegal settlers from the farm, but efforts to evict them were futile. After failing to evict the invaders, Dube approached the then Defence and War Veterans ministry for assistance in November 2022.

In response, the then secretary in the ministry Mark Grey Marongwe, wrote to the new NRZ general manager Respina Zinyanduko, seeking clarification on the matter.

“We note that the NRZ is in a joint venture with Dube which was duly entered and signed between yourselves on June 30 2003 for purposes of agricultural activities. It is regrettable to note that no meaningful farming activities have taken place owing to the presence of illegal settlers who have disrupted farming operations since 2003,” Marongwe wrote.

“We, therefore, implore your office as the owners of the land in dispute to exercise lawful authority in evicting these illegal squatters to enableour member to freely participate in government programmes aimed at enhancing national food security.”

On May 3, 2023, Zinyanduko wrote to permanent secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development, Theodious Chinyanga.

She said NRZ and PKD Malindi have been seeking to execute the eviction order without success and the illegal settlers still occupy the property.

On October 3, 2023, a legal advisor for war veterans affairs, one BC Maposa, wrote to the NRZ saying: “Such a scenario has unduly prejudiced and disadvantaged Dube who could not, owing to the prevailing situation, partake and participate in government programmes and schemes meant to empower veterans of the struggle.”
