THE British government has maintained that the August 1, 2018 post-election violence shootings and January 14-16, 2019 killings, which claimed over 20 lives after security forces fired into protestors, made it difficult for the Theresa May administration to relent on sanctions against Zimbabwe.

This came out on Friday following a two-hour meeting held in Harare between John Culley, a political and public affairs counsellor at the British embassy and a group of churches led by former Zanu PF central committee member Jimayi Muduvuri.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Zimbabwe Amalgamated Churches Council (Zacc) media liaison officer Davison Gomo said the meeting was the beginning of series of engagements with the former colonial master to have sanctions slapped on the country lifted.

“Some of the issues John Culley raised were the two significant events of August 1, 2018 and January 2019. He said the events made it extremely difficult for Britain to relent on sanctions on Zimbabwe,” Gomo said.

Britain had developed a soft spot for Zimbabwe after the removal of former President Robert Mugabe following the November 2017 coup, but military deployments on August 1 last year and January this year reignited the rivalry between Zanu PF and the United Kingdom government.

Britain and the European Union have ordered President Emmerson Mnangagwa to implement a raft of political and economic reforms as a precondition for the lifting of the sanctions.

Gomo said Culley claimed that the sanctions only targeted Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, Lands and Agriculture minister Perrance Shiri and Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander Valerio Sibanda.

“We put to them that in South Africa and Nigeria, many people die due to political violence during elections and despite the overwhelming evidence of human rights violations that lead to loss of human life, those countries are not under sanctions. Only Zimbabwe is under sanctions. Why?” he said.

“They [the British] had no answer; we told them that sanctions were being used for regime change. They are seeking the political removal of President Mnangagwa. The British denied that sanctions were hurting ordinary Zimbabweans.”

Muduvuri, the Zacc patron, said he was hopeful the sanctions would be removed and challenged the British government to accept that the embargoes were hurting the unintended targets.

“These are Zimbabweans sanctions; they are not targeted. They hurt everyone. We are going to meet the Americans next week and will continue to push until the sanctions are removed. South Africa and some Sadc countries have supported our call for the removal of sanctions and we are sure they will be removed,” Muduvuri said.

GOVERNMENT has announced plans to scale-up the provision of dialysis machines at public hospitals to better serve the increasing number of kidney patients.

Health and Child Care minister Obadiah Moyo made the disclosure in a speech read on his behalf during World Kidney Day commemorations at Mutare Provincial Hospital on Thursday last week.

The World Kidney Day is a global health campaign celebrated annually on March 14, and focuses on the health and importance of kidneys, to reduce occurrence of kidney diseases as well as other related health complications.

“Zimbabwe has more than 2 000 patients with chronic kidney diseases. Despite the growing burden of kidney diseases in Zimbabwe, kidney, health disparity and inequality are still widespread,” he said

“The Ministry of Health has plans to scale-up dialysis machines in Zimbabwe and thereby improve the outcomes of patients with kidney diseases,” he said.

“However, while national policies and strategies for non-communicable diseases in general are present in many countries, specific policies directed toward screening, prevention and treatment of kidney diseases are often lacking,” he said.

Moyo said his ministry was advocating for screening for kidney diseases as a primary healthcare intervention and also ensuring that patients receive basic health services.

He called on citizens to adopt healthy lifestyles, including the use of clean water, exercise, a healthy diet and tobacco consumption control.

“We want to make screening for kidney diseases a primary healthcare intervention including access to identification tools, urine and blood tests,” he added.

An estimated 850 million people are believed to have kidney challenges worldwide.

Consolidated Africa Services (CAS) will next month host the second ZIMDABA Business Platform and Investment Conference in London as part of efforts to market Zimbabwe to the world and attract investment into the country.

The conference is expected to present a platform for honest and open dialogue between Zimbabwe business leaders, potential investors, Government departments and delegates and interrogate the country’s business environment.

This year’s conference will run from April 9 to 11 at the Royal Geographic Society in London under the theme “Prosperity through Work” with focus on the country’s agribusiness industry. Agriculture takes centre stage as it powers the country’s economy, contributing 70 percent of the inputs in the manufacturing sector and employing close to 30 to percent of the country’s working population. The sector provides livelihood for more than 80 percent of Zimbabweans.

“The agricultural sector has been found to be the most flourishing sector and therefore requires additional work and input for its continued prosperity, sustainability and development.

“The conference will also be looking at the cycle around primary farming opportunities, including agri-processing and value-addition, as well as servicing the agricultural industry with the likes of farm machinery, fertilisers, chemicals, transport, logistics, warehousing and technology,” said CAS.

CAS also indicated that such conferences were in line with the Zimbabwe is Open for Business mantra as they seek to connect the country with potential investors.

Instead of waiting for foreign businesses to come to Zimbabwe to scout for opportunities, CAS is taking the Zimbabwean story to the world.

Said CAS: “With the transition in Government in November 2017, Consolidated Africa Services (CAS) felt that the timing was perfect to present this new Zimbabwe to the rest of the world as an attractive country to commence doing business with, and they took it to the financial centre of the world — London.

“The ZIMDABA Business Platform and Investment Conference is not waiting for the world to open up business to Zimbabwe. It’s taking Zimbabwe to the world.”

The ZIMDABA series of investment conferences is a Zimbabwean platform that brings together international business players at one event, with the main objective to attract serious and equitable investment into Zimbabwe operations for development, growth and expansion.

Last year’s conference was oversubscribed with delegates from the UK, Europe, USA, Middle East and China, exceeding organisers’ expectations.

“There were notable engagements in and with Zimbabwe following this inaugural conference,” said CAS.
