The Speaker of the National Assembly, Advocate Jacob Mudenda has called for the strengthening of relations between Zimbabwe and the United Arab Emirates through encouraging investment in various areas that include mining and manufacturing.

Advocate Mudenda said this during his three-day visit to the UAE last week following an invitation by his counterpart and President of the Federal National Council, Saqr Ghabash.

The Speaker was accompanied by three Members of Parliament Cdes Elina Shirichena, Mathias Tongofa and Ability Gandawa who are members of Portfolio Committee of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

In a statement yesterday on the visit, Parliament said the two Speakers applauded the excellent fraternal relations that exist between the two countries that have cascaded to their respective parliaments.

“Speaker Ghabash accentuated the need to embrace the sound relations between the two States as espoused by the visit to the UAE by Zimbabwe President Mnangagwa during the World Expo 2020 as His Excellency led celebrations on the Zimbabwe day. On his part, Speaker Mudenda expressed the desire for the further deepening of relations in strategic fields like mineral exploration and benefaction, agriculture, tourism and manufacturing as was espoused eloquently during the visit by President Mnangagwa, for the mutual economic benefit of the two countries’ citizenry,” reads part of the statement from Parliament.

High Court Judge Justice Pisirai Kwenda has dismissed an urgent chamber application by George Katsimberis who was seeking to stop his fraud trial before Harare regional Magistrate Vongai Muchuchuti Guwuriro who he also wants excused from hearing his matter.

Katsimberis had approached the High Court complaining that he is bound to be prejudiced if the trial continues before his concerns are addressed.

Katsimberis is accusing Mrs Guwuriro of being biased and wanted her recused from his trial.

He is also accusing the magistrate of having conflict of interest after she was sued for defamation by his lawyers.

Mrs Guwuriro dismissed his application for recusal, and aggrieved by this he mounted an application for review which is still pending at the High Court.

The builder is also demanding a Greek interpreter, insisting that he is not conversant with English.

In a brief High Court order, Justice Pisirayi Kwenda dismissed his application.

“Whereupon, after reading documents filed of record and hearing counsel, it is ordered that the application be and is hereby struck off with no order as to costs,” ruled the judge.

A full judgement is not yet available.

Katsimberis is represented by his lawyer Advocate Tinomuda Chinyoka who is taking instructions from Messrs Mutumbwa Mugabe and Partners.

According to court papers, his lawyer has been unwell for sometime.

In his fraud case, Katsimberis was making an application for referral of his case to the Constitutional Court.

On the night prior to February 14 hearing, Chinyoka’s health deteriorated.

On that day, Millicent Moyo from Mutumbwa Mugabe and Partners appeared in court seeking postponement.

A letter had been delivered to the prosecutor that Chinyoka had travelled to South Africa for medication hence the request for a postponement.

The magistrate however said the trial would commence and it continued.

Katsimberis complained that proceedings were done in English despite his request to have a Greek interpreter.

Advocate Chinyoka later showed up during afternoon proceedings despite that Moyo had indicated that he would be traveling to South Africa.

This promoted the magistrate to reprimand the lawyers for lying.

“The problem the court finds with the submissions is that in the morning it was submitted that Advocate Chinyoka actually traveled to South Africa last night and he is receiving treatment which apparently is not the correct position as we have Advocate Chinyoka before the court and he is still in the country and has appeared before the court.

“He explained that there could have been some communication breakdown but still for the counsel who appeared in the morning to categorically state that Advocate Chinyoka is in South Africa yet he is still in the country is wrong and should not be allowed. “Legal practitioners are officers of the court and make sure that proper facts are always placed before the court. So there is always due diligence upon the shoulders of each legal practitioner to make sure that the information they give the court is always true failure to do that borders on unprofessionalism,” said the magistrate.

Following the ruling, the issue was extensively covered in the media and the lawyers were under-fire from the Law Society.

The lawyer has sued the magistrate US$290 000 for defamation and injurious falsehoods respectively.

Two men from Mutoko were arrested by the police after they allegedly kidnapped a four-year-old girl on her way from school, with further allegations indicating that they intended to kill her for ritual purposes.

The two suspects are Pedo Samu (52) and Godfrey Gatsi (38).

Allegations are that after the arrest, Samu confessed that he intended to kill the girl for ritual purposes after being promised US$1500 by Gatsi.

Reports are that further investigations by the police established that the minor was also sexually abused.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident.

“Police in Mutoko have arrested Pedo Samu (52) and Godfrey Gatsi (38) in connection with a case of kidnapping which occurred on April 22, 2023 at Hurumutumbu Business Centre in which an ECD pupil (4) was abducted on her way home from school.

“Pedo Samu allegedly confessed that he intended to kill the victim for ritual purposes after being promised US$1500.00 by Godfrey Gatsi. Investigations by the police established that the victim was sexually abused,” he said.
