HARARE, June 23 (NewsDay Live) – Former opposition legislator Amos Chibaya has filed a police report after receiving an anonymous death threat linked to a planned political meeting scheduled for this past Sunday, June 21.

According to a report lodged at Milton Park Police Station under Report Received Book (RRB) Number 6797835, Chibaya received a threatening message warning him against proceeding with the meeting.

The message read: “Chimeeting chamuri kuronga chamangwana chikangoitwa uri kutsvira mumba” — loosely translated as, “If the meeting you are planning for tomorrow goes ahead, you will die from arson.”

Confirming the development, Chibaya said he feared for his safety.

“I am fearing for my life,” he said.

“I have file a police report and they said they are investigating.”

The planned meeting was intended to discuss the country’s prevailing political situation amid escalating tensions surrounding the controversial Constitution Amendment No. 3 Bill (CAB3).

The threat comes amid growing reports of intimidation, assaults, abductions and threats targeting individuals who have publicly opposed the constitutional amendment proposals.

In recent months, National Constitutional Assembly leader Lovemore Madhuku was assaulted and hospitalised following an attack linked to his opposition to the proposed amendments.

Several members of his party were also reportedly abducted and assaulted amid the heated debate over CAB3.

There are growing concerns over political intolerance and the shrinking democratic space as divisions over the constitutional changes continue to deepen.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi was not picking up calls for comment.

The government has appealed for additional support from development partners, churches as well as the private sector to facilitate the safe return of Zimbabwean nationals currently gathered at various centres in South Africa following recent targeted attacks against black immigrants in that country.

The Local Government ministry said the coordinated intervention is aimed at facilitating the safe and dignified return of affected citizens back home.

“The coordinated support efforts by the ministries of Local Government and Public Works and Foreign Affairs and International Trade are focused on facilitating the safe and dignified return of affected citizens back home,” the ministry said in a statement.

“Assistance being mobilised includes food provisions, temporary shelter, and transportation from South Africa to designated reception centres in Zimbabwe.

“In addition, the government, through the Emergency Fund, is also mobilizing resources to support and fund this important workstream as part of ongoing national humanitarian response efforts.”.

The ministry added that a number of organisations have already joined the humanitarian response.

“We remain grateful for the assistance and solidarity demonstrated thus far by our partners and stakeholders,” the ministry said.

The ministry appealed for additional support from various sectors of society to strengthen ongoing efforts.

“The ministry welcomes additional support from the private sector, humanitarian agencies, development partners, NGOs, church organizations, and all well-wishers to strengthen ongoing repatriation efforts and many other Civil Protection activities aimed at safeguarding communities and supporting vulnerable populations,” it said.

The ministry further revealed that preparations have been made to receive returnees at ports of entry and facilitate their reintegration into communities.

“Relevant departments have been activated to receive returnees at the border and in communities for their integration back into the community. The response to this escalating situation requires a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach.”

The repatriation programme forms part of national humanitarian response mechanisms designed to protect citizens in times of crisis and ensure their safe return and reintegration into society.
