About a thousand municipal workers under the Combined Municipality Workers Union of Zimbabwe (CMWUZ) are set to benefit from residential stands in Norton, in a move meant to address the accommodation crisis for union members.

This was revealed during a groundbreaking ceremony of the residential stands on Saturday after CMWUZ clinched a deal with a local land owner, Beyond Reality Cooperative, in Norton, with the latter availing stands to the union.

The stands were shown as part of the land secured for residential purposes.

CMWUZ chairperson, Shadrack Chikore, said they had since paid part of the money for the residential stands measuring from 200m2 to 2000m2.

“We want our union members to be landlords and we are happy that this dream is coming true,” he said.

“We asked for land from local authorities close to Harare, but we had to settle for Norton due to friendly terms and conditions from the land developer.”

Allocation of residential stands for the first 100 beneficiaries is set for November 18, with those who paid at least 40% of the required money expected to begin construction.

CMWUZ was formed in 2003 with the objectives of protecting municipal workers’ rights and improving their welfare

“Currently we have close to 400 members to benefit from this housing project, but we are expecting the number to grow to 1 000 before year end, as more members are interested in joining and at least getting a residential stand,” Chikore said.

“We are working with our legal team to ensure that there are no loopholes in the whole process. Next week, about 100 members or home-seekers will be allocated residential stands that we have already paid for before moving to another phase.”

CMWUZ is composed of Harare municipal workers.
