A 19,2-KILOMETRE stretch of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road has so far been completed and opened to traffic as the rehabilitation project progresses well.

There is a total of about 440,4 km between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, which are expected to be completed within 10 months and the authorities recently mobilised five reputable contractors — Fossil Contracting, Masimba Contracting, Syvern Investments, Bitumen Resources and Tensor Systems.

So far, over 50 000 kilometres of roads have been refurbished countrywide under the Government’s ongoing Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme 2 (ERRP2).

The initiative, which began in 2021, has also seen repairs to over 2 000 road structures with the country targeting 84 000 km of road network, of which an estimated 93 percent was recently classified as in fair to poor condition, requiring urgent attention.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development confirmed this Monday that progress was being made along the ongoing rehabilitation of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road.

“The upgrade of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls road continues, with cement stabilisation work now actively underway in the Insuza area,” its said.

“This critical process creates the strong, durable foundation needed for the new road surface.

“Progress at a Glance: total project length is 440,4 km and 19,2km have been completed and opened to traffic. The balance of work remaining is 421,2 km.

“As a key project for boosting regional connectivity, tourism, and trade, we are committed to the journey. While there is still a long way to go, we are paving the way forward,” said the ministry.

The Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway is one of Zimbabwe’s most strategic roads, linking the country to regional tourism hubs and trade corridors extending into Zambia, Botswana, and beyond.

Its rehabilitation is expected to boost tourism flows to Hwange National Park and Victoria Falls, enable safer coal transportation from Hwange mines, and enhance both local and regional commerce.

The Government has accelerated ERRP work nationwide, targeting both major highways and community access roads to ensure inclusive development.

Over the weekend, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona presented at the national pre-budget seminar in Bulawayo, where he highlighted major milestones and outlined a strategic path toward a resilient, inclusive, and modern transport system for Zimbabwe.

He emphasised that a holistic approach was essential to address the ministry’s challenges, with enhanced resource mobilisation being a key priority.
