The Government has extended its condolences to the Catholic Church and the Apostolic Nunciature in Zimbabwe following the death of the mother of Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Janusz Urbańczyk, the Vatican’s top diplomat and the Pope’s representative in Harare.

In a statement, Acting President Dr Constantino Chiwenga said the Government and people of Zimbabwe shared Archbishop Urbańczyk’s grief during what he described as a deeply painful loss.

“Your Excellency, it is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that I received the news of the passing on of your beloved mother, Mrs Irena Urbańczyk,” said Dr Chiwenga.

“On behalf of the Government and People of Zimbabwe, and on my own behalf, I extend my sincere and heartfelt condolences to you and your family members.”

The Acting President said the loss of a mother was profound, noting her enduring role as a source of love, wisdom and strength throughout one’s life.

“The loss of a mother is a deeply painful experience, as she is a source of love, wisdom and strength whose influence endures throughout one’s life,” he said. Dr Chiwenga said the Government was praying for comfort and strength for Archbishop Urbańczyk, his family and the entire Apostolic Nunciature during the period of mourning.

“During this time of grief, we pray that the Lord grant you, your family, and the entire Apostolic Nunciature comfort, courage and peace,” he said.

“May you draw strength from the enduring legacy of her life, the values she instilled, and the sure hope of God’s comfort and faithfulness that anchors our shared Christian faith.”

He said Zimbabwe joined the Apostolic Nunciature in honouring the life and legacy of Mrs Urbańczyk, whom he described as a devoted mother and matriarch whose influence would endure through the lives she touched.

“The Government and people of Zimbabwe join the Apostolic Nunciature in honouring the life of a remarkable mother, a devoted matriarch and a woman whose legacy will endure through the lives she touched,” said the Acting President.

“Please accept our heartfelt sympathy and assurance of prayers as you and your loved ones navigate this difficult time.”
