Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Barbara Rwodzi has urged airport authorities to uphold Zimbabwe’s renowned culture of hospitality, saying their conduct at ports of entry plays a critical role in shaping first impressions for international visitors and returning citizens.
Minister Rwodzi said airport authorities are on the frontline of demonstrating warmth and professionalism to travellers arriving at the country’s various entry points, particularly during the festive season when traffic volumes surge.
She emphasised that the diaspora community remains a vital pillar of national economic growth and development, and must therefore be received with dignity and kindness.
Minister Rwodzi made the remarks while engaging airport authorities at Joshua Nkomo International Airport in Bulawayo as part of the Ministry’s annual Meet and Greet campaign.
“As we welcome the diaspora community and international visitors, let’s be hospitable to them.
“President Mnangagwa always stresses that the diaspora community is key to national development, therefore let’s show kindness to them as they return home this festive season.
“Also, international visitors should be warmly welcomed,” she said.
The Minister and her team, which included Zimbabwe Tourism Authority officials, also took the opportunity to interact with airport staff and tourism stakeholders, encouraging continued collaboration in improving service delivery and promoting the country’s tourism brand.
The Meet and Greet programme is being rolled out at other ports of entry countrywide as Government intensifies efforts to grow the tourism sector and boost arrivals throughout the year.
The initiative continues to play a key role in positioning Zimbabwe as a preferred festive season destination, while strengthening cultural exchange and reaffirming the country’s commitment to hospitality excellence.
Minister Rwodzi noted that there is heightened activity at various entry points, a development she described as a positive sign for the tourism and hospitality industry.
Airport authorities confirmed their readiness to handle increased passenger volumes but appealed for an extension of operating hours to ease congestion and improve service delivery. Currently, Joshua Nkomo International Airport operates from 6am to 7pm.
