NEWLY accredited Ambassadors to Zimbabwe from Pakistan, Germany and Spain yesterday presented their letters of credence to President Mnangagwa at State House in Harare, with all three pledging to upscale their relations with Harare on all fronts during their diplomatic tenures.

Pakistan will be represented by Ambassador Muhammad Amjad Aziz Qazi, Germany by Ambassador Christopher Retzlaff and Spain by Ambassador Ms Lourdes Sangroniz.

Speaking to the media after his closed-door meeting with the President at State House, Ambassador Qazi said during his diplomatic mission, he will work towards improving trade, investment and economic relations between Zimbabwe and Pakistan.

“I have just held a very constructive and fruitful meeting with the President of Zimbabwe and we discussed entirely the whole range of bilateral ties and we also discussed many areas in which we are already excelling, and also those areas in which we would like to build upon.

“For instance, we have very friendly, cordial political ties and we also have very robust defence ties.

“And I discussed with the President that we need to improve the areas of trade, economic, and investment and of course, as Ambassador of Pakistan to Zimbabwe, I will do my best to improve ties in all areas of importance, particularly focusing on trade, investment and economic matters,” he said.

The Pakistani envoy cited agriculture, infrastructure development, defence and tourism as focus areas.

Germany’s Ambassador Retzlaff said he had fruitful deliberations with President Mnangagwa and was ready to hit the ground running in upscaling economic relations between Harare and Berlin.

“I am very much looking forward to the time of assignment here. I had a very good conversation with His Excellency the President, where we touched upon the areas where we could intensify our relations here. I think there is room to improve our relations. There is much potential, especially in economic relations here. Germany has the strongest economy in the European union and one of the strongest economies in the world,” he said.

The Ambassador said during his tenure, he would not only promote trade but also increased German investment in Zimbabwe.

Under the Second Republic, a notable increase in inquiries from German investors keen on setting up operations in Zimbabwe has been registered.

“It certainly has a lot to offer for mutually beneficial cooperation in economic relations here. I think it will be important that we not only increase trade between Germany and Zimbabwe, but that we also see more German investment in Zimbabwe here, meaning creating jobs in Zimbabwe here, doing value addition here,” he said.

On her part, Spain’s Ambassador Sangroniz began by expressing gratitude to President Mnangagwa for the warm hospitality accorded to her.  She then conveyed Spain’s interest in maintaining political relations with Zimbabwe while also ramping up economic cooperation. “I have to say I thank President Mnangagwa for his warm welcome and for so gladly receiving the suggestions to touch upon some areas of cooperation which we both view as the main ones to dwell upon,” she said.
