President Mnangagwa has conferred national hero status on Brigadier General (Rtd) Jonathan Hungwe, who passed away on Friday at his farm in Mwenezi.

Brigadier General (Rtd) Hungwe was 68.

The Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira delivered the news to the Hungwe family and other mourners, including the Zimbabwe National Army Commander, Lieutenant General Walter Tapfumaneyi, during a military funeral parade at the 4

Infantry Brigade Headquarters in Masvingo this afternoon.

Minister Chadzamira said President Mnangagwa honoured the national hero in recognition of the role he played during and after the liberation struggle.

He said funeral arrangements will be announced in due course following consultations with the Hungwe family.

Brigadier General (Rtd) Hungwe’s Chimurenga name was Vhito Masango Ferrari. He joined the liberation struggle in 1978.

The national hero is survived by his wife, Susan, and six children.
