THE City of Bulawayo said its move to hire eight refuse compactors from the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works is part of the council’s ongoing efforts to stabilise and enhance waste management operations, particularly in areas that experienced erratic refuse collection in recent weeks.
In a statement, acting town clerk Mr Tennyson Mpunzi said the immediate focus will be on restoring regular refuse collection in the central business district and Wards 1 to 5, where waste has become a concern.
“The Community Refuse Removal Programme will continue in Wards 6 to 29, where it has proven to be effective,” he said.
“The acquisition of the new refuse compactors will see improvements in the collection of waste from shopping centres across the city.”
Mr Mpunzi said the compactors will also enable the city to increase collection frequency, clear existing backlogs and ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for all residents.
He urged residents to take out their garbage on collection days and avoid illegal dumping.
