A 54-YEAR-OLD man from Old Magwegwe suburb in Bulawayo has been found dead after committing suicide, having earlier confided to a neighbour that he was struggling with economic hardships and that his children were not taking care of him.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident, saying the now deceased, Zebron Phiri, was discovered hanging in his house on 17 August.
“On 16 August 2025, the now deceased confided to his neighbour, a 78-year-old woman, that he wanted to commit suicide due to economic hardship and because his children were not taking care of him. He further said he would hang himself inside his room and leave the doors and windows open so that people would easily find his body,” said Insp Msebele.
She said the following morning at around 7AM, the neighbour noticed that the doors and windows of Phiri’s house were open and called his name but got no response before alerting another neighbour.
“They entered the house and found the now deceased lying lifeless on the floor with a rope around his neck, while the other end was hanging from the truss. A report was made to the police,” said Insp Msebele.
She urged members of the public to take suicide conversations seriously and to seek professional help for affected individuals.
