A 42-YEAR-OLD woman from Gaza, Chipinge, was robbed of US$6 000 by three unknown male suspects.
The incident occurred on September 27, at around 6pm.
Acting Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident and identified the victim as Locadia Muvenyengwa, a well-known businesswoman in and around Gaza.
Muvenyengwa was driving her Nissan UD truck along the Mutare-Chipinge Road, heading towards Chipinge, and on reaching the CSC turn-off, she stopped to tighten the tent covering groceries in the loading box, as it was obstructing her rearview mirror.
Muvenyengwa was accompanied by her employee, Simbarashe Kiwa (43), whom she asked to tighten the tent. While they were still parked, an apple-green Toyota Aqua arrived and pulled over a few metres ahead.
One of the unknown suspects disembarked and approached Muvenyengwa.
The suspect greeted her using her child’s name, indicating that he knew her from Chipinge, and offered her US$10 to buy a drink, which she refused, arguing that she did not know him.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said the suspect then told Muvenyengwa that her tyre was flat. When she went to check, she found that the tyre was fine.
As she was about to get back into the truck, the Aqua drove off.
That was when she noticed that her handbag, containing US$6 000, her passport, and driver’s licence, had been stolen.
Muvenyengwa asked nearby well-wishers to follow the vehicle, but no one did. She later reported the matter at ZRP Mutare Central.
Officers attended the scene, but no arrests or recoveries have been made so far.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka urged members of the public with any information that may assist in the investigation to come forward.
He also advised people, especially business owners, to avoid moving around with large sums of money and to remain vigilant at all times.
The total value stolen was US$6 000.
