A man, who lost all of his left-hand’s five fingers while operating a machine at HappySky Zimbabwe, has initiated steps to get compensation following his dismissal for the handicap.

Justice Mulika (27) suffered a serious injury on December 3, 2017, at the company’s plant in Msasa, where he was a machine operator.

He was dismissed two months later without compensation, and his condition has been tormenting him for the past eight years.

Mulika has now turned to the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) where he has registered his claim under 1251305.

“I used to operate a machine which makes plastic footwear. As I was working on the machine just after beginning my night shift on the day in question, my left arm got entangled in the machine and I was severely injured.

“One of the bosses rushed me to Parirenyatwa Hospital in his BMW X5 vehicle and I was treated but unfortunately, I lost all my left-hand fingers. Nigel Chipisa who was from the human resources department then cited my disability as the reason for my discharge,” said Mulika. He said the company was reluctant to pay his compensation and kept shifting goalposts for eight years until he approached NSSA.

Mulika said the only action taken by the company in the aftermath of his injury was payment of some of his medical bills at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals. HappySky Zimbabwe official, Collin Sakala, admitted to the delays in Mulika’s compensation, confirming he was injured at the company’s premises. “This happened a long time ago and at that time, I wasn’t in charge of operations. We hope to deal with his claim now that he brought his papers from NSSA.

“There were so many changes in management personnel and this may have caused delays in the payment of his compensation,” said Sakala. NSSA has confirmed receiving Mulika’s claim and an official said they will be looking into the issue. “We confirm that we have been informed of an incident in which Justice Mulika was reportedly injured in the line of duty.

“According to the report we have received, this incident happened some time ago and we are deploying our inspectors to the factory to investigate what happened.

“The case is being handled under claim number 1251305,” said the official.
