SUDANESE Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Ibrahim Elsheikh Ahmed, yesterday met with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, to discuss ways of strengthening relations between the two countries, with particular emphasis on economic and trade cooperation.

Ambassador Ahmed met the Speaker at his office at the Parliament building in Mt Hampden.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Ambassador Ahmed confirmed that they had discussed a range of issues aimed at deepening the cordial ties between Sudan and Zimbabwe.

“We discussed bilateral relations between the two countries, especially in the field of the economy and trade, and our good relations, and he pledged to visit Sudan soon and cooperate with us,” Ambassador Ahmed said.

He added that work was under way to conclude memoranda of understanding to formalise and enhance cooperation between the two nations.

“We are working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade to prepare them for signing,” Ambassador Ahmed said.

The Sudanese Ambassador said the talks also covered the civil conflict in his country and the role the African Union (AU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) could play in restoring peace.

Sudan has been embroiled in conflict since April 2023, when fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, resulting in thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions.

“We agreed that African problems should be solved within Africa and with the help of the AU and even SADC,” Ambassador Ahmed said.

He said Adv Mudenda also briefed him on the Constitutional Amendment Number 3 Bill, which is intended to strengthen the country’s development agenda by creating a more stable governance environment and providing the policy continuity necessary to drive long‑term economic transformation.
