FOUR inmates at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison have recorded songs using a music recording studio at the facility.
The studio was officially commissioned yesterday and the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) believes it will help in the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates.
Deputy Commissioner General, Dr Granisia Musango, said the event was more than just the commissioning of a music recording studio.
“Today, we are not just opening a recording studio, we are opening a doorway to restoration, voice, and hope.
“This space is a testament to our belief that every person possesses potential, creativity and a story worth telling.
“Music is powerful. It heals, teaches, and connects us. For many of our inmates, it provides a safe place to reflect, express emotions that words alone cannot capture, and begin the journey of rebuilding identity – with dignity.”
She added:
“Rehabilitation is not merely about correction, it is about renewal.
“When we invest in someone’s gifts, we are investing in their future and the future of the society to which they will return.
“Let this studio become a place of discipline, creativity, teamwork, and growth.
“Let your music speak life, truth, and guide you toward purpose.
“May it become a beacon of hope, healing, and new beginnings.”
The studio is the first of its kind in Southern Africa and the fifth on the continent.
Sponsored and renovated by Tichawona Chacha of Sungano Studios, the project has already seen four inmates record their songs, offering hope to aspiring artists serving their sentences.
Chacha hailed the Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (ZIMURA) for their support.
“I also acknowledge the presence of musicians, producers, radio presenters, and media members – your role is crucial in bridging these walls with the outside world.
“Through your platforms, you can help carry these voices to every home in Zimbabwe and beyond.
“This initiative goes beyond music, it’s about restoring identity and self-worth.
“Many inmates grapple with guilt, shame, and hopelessness.
“But when they pick up a microphone, write lyrics, or hear their own voice on playback, something profound changes inside them.
“Music becomes therapy, healing, and ultimately, transformation.”
The event was graced by notable guests, including Leonard Zhakata, Knowledge Kunenyati, Sulumani Chimbetu, and ZIMURA documentation officer Obey Petros.
