TRANSPORT minister Felix Tapiwa Mhona has outlined an ambitious plan to remove pirate taxis, commonly known as mishikashika from the roads, in a bid to build a resilient and modern transport network for Zimbabwe.

Mhona detailed his ministry’s strategic priorities, which hinge on a comprehensive approach to tackling sector-wide challenges and mobilising crucial financial resources.

“A holistic approach is essential if we are to effectively address the challenges facing our sector,” he said.

“Enhanced resource mobilisation remains a key priority to ensure sustainability and progress.”

He confirmed that public-private partnerships (PPPs), retained revenues, user fees and fines will be central to bankrolling both ongoing and future infrastructural projects.

A key focus of the presentation was the urgent mission to restore order in urban transport.

Mhona revealed collaboration with the ministries of Home Affairs and Local Government and Public Works.

He said the co-ordinated effort aimed to eliminate the rampant mishikashika, enhance traffic management and significantly improve public safety.

“We are determined to bring sanity to the urban transport space through co-ordinated enforcement and improved planning,” he indicated.

Mhona announced long-term interventions, including advanced plans for a nationwide integrated mass bus transit system.

This system is designed to provide efficient, affordable and safe public transport for all citizens.

Mhona emphasised the revival of key parastatals.

He announced that the National Railways of Zimbabwe is earmarked for recapitalisation to rehabilitate locomotives and restore operational capacity.

Furthermore, the government is advocating for the absorption of legacy debts that have crippled national carrier Air Zimbabwe.

Mhona expressed gratitude for the strong collaboration with the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport, underscoring that collective commitment is vital for progress.

“Together, we can build a resilient and modern transport system that drives national development and enhances the lives of our people,” he said.
