The government continues to demonstrate strong commitment to adhering to regional and international frameworks for the protection of persons with disabilities.
Speaking during a belated International Day for Persons with Disabilities commemoration held at Chief Fuyane’s homestead in Matobo District, Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare and Matobo Constituency legislator, Edgar Moyo, said programmes, policies, and investments have been implemented to ensure that persons with disabilities are not only included but actively supported to contribute to and benefit from development.
He emphasized that the commemoration is not only a day of celebration but also a day of reflection, accountability, and renewed commitment to inclusion, equity, and empowerment of persons with disabilities.
This year’s International Day for Persons with Disabilities was held under the theme, “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress.”
“This year’s theme is both timely and urgent. It challenges us to build communities, institutions, and systems that empower every citizen to achieve their full potential. Under the visionary and transformative leadership of His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa, our nation continues to move with purpose towards the attainment of Vision 2030, the transformation of Zimbabwe into an upper middle-income society.
“At the centre of this national vision stands a powerful and unifying mantra: ‘Leaving no one and no place behind,’” he said.
Minister Moyo also highlighted that as the country concluded observing 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, the National Strategy on the Prevention of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence places strong focus on protecting women and girls with disabilities, who remain at high risk of abuse and discrimination.
