HARARE – A Harare woman has won a dramatic court battle against her obsessive ex-husband, who allegedly tormented her for five years — stalking, threatening, and even stealing her groceries to give to his new wife.
Beauty Musekiwa told the Harare Civil Court that her former husband, Murwira Mandivengerei, refused to accept that their marriage was over and turned her life into a nightmare of fear and harassment.
Magistrate Ashton Dube on Wednesday granted Musekiwa a protection order, finally putting an end to what she described as “years of terror from a man who couldn’t let go.”
“I am afraid that one day he might kill me,” Musekiwa told the court. “He threatens me, yet he has a new family. He doesn’t want to see me happy. Every time I buy something, he comes and takes it away. He says I should not enjoy life with another man while he is still alive.”
According to Musekiwa, Mandivengerei would storm her home and workplace uninvited, hurling insults and, at times, physically assaulting her whenever he suspected she had found a new partner.
“For five years, I suffered in silence,” she said tearfully. “He thought I would never stand up for myself, but I realised that silence only gave him more power.”
Mandivengerei denied the abuse allegations but admitted taking household property, claiming it belonged to him from their marriage. He also argued that he did not recognise the separation because it had not been finalised “traditionally,” accusing Musekiwa of disrespecting cultural norms.
“Those things are mine. I only took what belongs to me,” he said.
Magistrate Dube, however, rejected his defence, reminding him that separation entitled both parties to live freely and independently. The court ordered Mandivengerei to return any property not legally his and warned him to stay away from Musekiwa’s home and cease all contact.
The ruling marks a victory for Musekiwa and highlights a growing trend of women turning to the courts for protection against abusive ex-partners who refuse to move on.
Leaving the courtroom visibly relieved, Musekiwa said: “I am grateful to the court for protecting me. For years, I lived in fear. Today, I can finally breathe again.”
