A 48-YEAR-OLD driver, who sped off from an accident scene after a vehicle he was driving hit and killed a pedestrian along Samora Machel Avenue, has been arrested.
Everson Masuka was arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run road traffic accident which occurred on March 28, 2026, at around 5.30 am along Samora Machel Avenue, near the Harare Showground.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the suspect, who was driving a Nissan Hardbody vehicle towards Chegutu, allegedly swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid a collision with a vehicle in front of him.
“In the process, he struck a 45-year-old man who was walking on the roadside. The victim was dragged underneath the vehicle for approximately 20 metres,” he said.
“He sustained severe head injuries and fractured legs. He died on the spot. The motorist did not stop after the accident.
Investigations are still in progress.
Meanwhile, police are also investigating another fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 54 km peg along the Norton–Murombedzi Road on March 28, 2026, at approximately 7:30 pm.
A motorist who was driving a Tata truck towards Murombedzi lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road to the left, striking four pedestrians who were seated by the roadside.
Two of the pedestrians died on the spot, while the third one succumbed to injuries upon admission at Father O’Hea Hospital in Kutama. The fourth pedestrian and the truck driver are currently admitted at the same institution.
Police are yet to release the names of the deceased.
