THE 14th annual Husqvarna Mud Run turned Donny Brooke into a hive of activity on Saturday, as hundreds participants braved the mud to support KidzCan Zimbabwe in its mission to assist children battling cancer.
Kidzcan Zimbabwe’s executive director, Mr Daniel McKenzie, said the event, held in partnership with various partners, was also meant to raise awareness on child cancers.
“We are doing this for the well-being of children, and we have cancer survivors here sharing their testimonies,” he said.
“We need to tell the story and make sure that everyone knows the signs and symptoms of cancer because detection saves lives.”
He said all the proceeds will be used to support the children with cancer across the country.
“All the proceeds from this event will go directly toward supporting children with cancer across the country,” he said.
KidzCan Zimbabwe Health and Awareness Coordinator, Mrs Charity Kawadza, emphasised different types of cancer that affect children in Zimbabwe.
“We have several types of cancers that affect both children and adults, such as cancer of the blood, cancer of the eye, brain tumours, lymphoma, and soft tissue sarcoma — and what is important is early diagnosis and treatment.
“This keeps the flow natural, while highlighting cancers that are both prevalent and recognisable in awareness campaigns.”
One of the cancer survivors, Lauren Moyo from Victoria Falls, said she was diagnosed with acute lympho was grateful to KidzCan for coming to her rescue.
“I am thankful for the support that I got from KidzCan, and I am glad that I am now a cancer survivor who is encouraging others to stay positive,” she said.
