KAROI Town Council has rolled out an extensive road rehabilitation programme under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme Phase Two (ERRP2) as part of efforts to improve road safety, ease traffic movement and enhance service delivery across the town.

The programme, which is being implemented in partnership with Shenkel Construction Company, targets key road networks that have deteriorated over time due to heavy traffic, age and prolonged exposure to adverse weather conditions.

Speaking on the project, newly appointed Karoi Town Secretary, Mr Tongai Mandude, said the rehabilitation drive was a critical intervention aimed at restoring the town’s road infrastructure and ensuring safer, more reliable transport for residents and businesses.

“Council, through the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme Phase Two, has partnered with Shenkel Construction Company to implement a comprehensive road rehabilitation exercise aimed at improving the condition of our roads and ensuring they are safe and trafficable,” said Mr Mandude.

He said the initiative is aligned with the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), which prioritises infrastructure development as a key driver of socio-economic growth and improved service delivery.

“Road infrastructure is a key enabler of economic growth and development. This programme dovetails with the objectives of NDS2, which emphasises the upgrading of road networks to support efficient service delivery and sustainable urban development,” he said.

Under the current phase of works, several roads have already been resurfaced, including Crescent Lane, Lakeview Lane and Church Lane, resulting in improved access within both residential and commercial areas of the town.

Mr Mandude also revealed that Shenkel Construction Company is rehabilitating Chiedza Road at no cost to the local authority as part of its corporate social responsibility programme.

“The rehabilitation of Chiedza Road is being undertaken at no cost to council. The works focus on pothole patching and improving the road’s trafficability index to enhance safety for all road users,” he said.

The council has also identified additional roads for rehabilitation in the next phase of the programme, including Chikangwe Road, Chikangwe Bus Terminus, the KTC Engineering Access Road, Valley Road, Mupfuti Road, Sharp Street and Bougainvillaea Street.

Karoi is also benefiting from complementary road surfacing projects being implemented by other contractors.

A 0.7-kilometre stretch of GMB Road has been constructed by Earthlygate, while Goodhope is currently working on a two-kilometre stretch of road in the Kubatana area.

Mr Mandude said the combined interventions are expected to significantly improve traffic flow, road safety and overall service delivery in Karoi.

“These projects form part of a broader and coordinated approach to road rehabilitation in Karoi. They will significantly improve trafficability and support economic and social activities across the town,” he said.
