A MAN allegedly conspired with his wife to kill his ex-wife at their home in Crowhill, Harare, before dumping her body near the Water Works complex, close to the Hunyani Bridge, in Chitungwiza.
Brian Chanachimwe, 34, allegedly lured his ex-wife Jennifer Karembo, 35, to his house, under the pretext that he wanted to give her US$150 for their three children’s school fees.
Chanachimwe and his wife, Olipa Chide, allegedly strangled Jennifer before dumping her body near the Water Works Complex.
The murder was allegedly motivated by an attempt by Chanachimwe to evade US$2,500 in overdue child maintenance payments.
The tragic incident happened earlier this month.
Chanachimwe has already appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing murder charges.
Chide, who was expected to be charged as an accomplice, committed suicide at her grandparents’ farm in Gutu on Wednesday.
In an effort to conceal their crime, the couple allegedly took Jennifer’s cellphone, removed the SIM card, and buried it near a rock behind their house.
They also allegedly burned her purse, which contained her national identity card, in an attempt to erase any trace of her identity.
The couple allegedly hired a vehicle from a man identified as Solomon Gwanyanya, claiming they needed to transport a sick relative.
The couple allegedly enlisted the help of their accomplice, identified as Jonah Nekati, to load Jennifer’s lifeless body into the hired Honda Fit around midnight.
Nekati remains at large.
The car was driven to a place near Eyecourt, opposite St Mary’s Waterworks, where they dumped Jennifer’s body.
The following day, a man identified as Samson Bhobho, saw Jennifer’s body close to a dust road.
Now, Jennifer’s family says she will fight for justice from her grave.
Jennifer’s burial in Hwedza was an emotionally-charged affair, leaving family members with numerous unanswered questions.
“We are pained as a family. We are just waiting to see what they are going to do because anga asina kana kuroora,” said Ashley Kalembo, the family spokesperson.
“Tichatangira ipapo, as for ngozi vanopedzerana vega as you can see that he committed the offence, and was arrested in less than one week.
“They committed the offence with his wife, who also committed suicide, on the day he was arrested.
“She will fight from the grave.”
Ashley, who is Jenniffer’s brother, added:
“On the day of her disappearance, something was unusual.
“Her phone was not reachable throughout the afternoon.
“She did not return home that night.
“The following day, my younger sister called Brian to inquire about Jennifer’s whereabouts.
“Brian claimed he had met Jennifer the day before, given her US$50, and left her shopping in town.
“We then reported Jennifer as a missing person.
“The missing person’s report was filed on January 13.
“Later that same day, police discovered a woman’s body and US$11 was found on her body.”
Jennifer’s sister, who chose not to be named, said justice should prevail.
“We just want justice to prevail, nothing else.
“We wish the courts to consider our pain as a family.”
Another family member said:
“We are in very much pain. We want revenge.”
Allegations are that Chanachimwe, together with his wife Chide, conspired to murder Jennifer.
Jennifer’s relatives claim this was all meant to help Chanachimwe stop paying maintenance for the three kids he shared with Jennifer.
On January 12, Chanachimwe allegedly lured Jennifer from her home in Mayambara, Seke, to his home in Crowhill, Harare, under the pretext he wanted to give her US$150 for their children’s school fees.
Chanachimwe is set to return to court on February 4.
