A joint team of medical staff from the flagship public sector Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and the private Trauma Centre in Harare recently performed a successfully open-heart surgery for mitral valve replacement.
The surgery, carried out by a dedicated team of local surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses, signalled a new era in Zimbabwe’s healthcare sector.
Dr Vivek Solanki, director of Trauma Centre Borrowdale, described the procedure as a defining moment in the nation’s healthcare history.
“Today, we mark a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s healthcare history,” he said.
“I am honoured to announce that we have successfully performed open-heart surgery, cardiac stenting, preventive medicine and neurosurgery, right here in our country. This achievement is a testament to the expertise and dedication of our medical team, including cardiac specialists, anaesthetists and nurses from both Trauma Centre and Parirenyatwa Hospital.”
The historic procedure followed the establishment of the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory (CathLab) at the centre, which has already been instrumental in cardiac stenting and other life-saving interventions.
Dr Solanki credited the success to a public-private partnership between Trauma Centre and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and said it was a model of collaboration.
“Our joint public-private partnership with Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals has been instrumental in this success,” he said. “Their expert cardiac nurses have been invaluable, and this partnership is a shining example of what can be achieved when the public and private sectors come together to improve healthcare.”
He said the breakthrough will not only save lives locally, but also attract medical tourism from across the region.
“Our public-private partnership has elevated the standard of medical care in Zimbabwe and positions us as a hub for medical tourism,” Dr Solanki said.
“Patients can now access world-class treatment without having to cross borders. This is a moment of immense pride for our nation, and we should celebrate the tireless efforts of our healthcare professionals.”
Dr Solanki also urged continued investment in healthcare infrastructure and training and said such progress proved that Zimbabwe has the capacity to match regional and global medical standards.
“As a nation, this achievement shows what we can accomplish when we invest in the right infrastructure and expertise. With continued collaboration, we will strengthen our health sector for better outcomes,” he said.
The success of the open-heart surgery at Trauma Centre, along with ongoing advances in cardiac stenting, preventive medicine and neurosurgery, showed Zimbabwe’s growing medical capabilities.
With cutting-edge technology, skilled personnel and strengthened partnerships, the country’s healthcare sector is steadily transforming into a regional centre for advanced treatment.
