THE Ministry of Health and Child Care is working to deploy additional specialist medical doctors at Rusape General Hospital, with a view to enhance specialised and quality medical care for citizens in the second largest district in Manicaland.
The initiative, coupled with plans to establish another district hospital in Makoni, which is expected to alleviate congestion at Rusape General Hospital, currently serving as a referral point for 60 clinics in the district, was announced by Manicaland Provincial Medical Director (PMD), Dr Munyaradzi Mukuzunga during the hospital’s end-of-year and long-service awards ceremony held last Friday.
The deployment of specialist doctors and the proposed establishment of a district hospital are key steps to improve healthcare services in the district, bringing specialised medical expertise closer to patients’ homes.
The ceremony, which recognised the dedication and service of hospital staff, underscored the importance of teamwork and commitment in delivering quality healthcare services.
“You have demonstrated a profound understanding of the health needs of your community. The renovation of your main theatre and the deployment of a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist mean that critical women’s health services have been brought right to the doorstep of Makoni residents – a powerful example of leaving no one behind. The hospital is also working towards becoming a district hospital, and we are working towards having a separate district hospital. It is within our plans, as the Ministry of Health and Child Care, to add other specialist doctors to complement the one already here.
“Furthermore, the systematic reduction of OPD waiting times from four hours to three, and your target of two hours going into the future, demonstrates a focus on efficiency that respects the dignity and time of the patient.
“The service you provide here in Makoni is not isolated – it is fundamentally national. It is through the committed, tireless service exemplified by this hospital that we make tangible progress towards the ambitious vision articulated by President Mnangagwa – the attainment of an upper-middle-income society by 2030,” said Dr Mukuzunga.
He added that staff must continue to work diligently in serving patients regardless of background and social standing.
He commended the hospital for having flexible payment plans for patients.
“A healthy nation is a productive nation. A nation where its citizens are confident in the quality, affordability and accessibility of their healthcare system is a nation ready to achieve its highest aspirations. Rusape General Hospital stands as a beacon, illustrating how local excellence contributes directly to this shared national goal. The Government is proud to champion the efforts of every sector that improves the lives of our people.
The core philosophy driving our collective national effort is clear and unwavering – equity in health and leaving no one behind. This is more than a slogan – it is a commitment to ensuring that every citizen, regardless of their background or location, has access to affordable and high-quality services. Your commitment to maintaining at least an 80 percent client satisfaction level and ensuring flexible payment terms is the direct, local implementation of this national guarantee,” said Dr Mukuzunga.
Rusape Genera Hospital medical superintendent, Dr Stewart Karembo said there has been service improvement in the maternity unit, while pharmacy stock continues to rise.
The hospital’s client satisfaction survey stood at 80 percent.
“In the maternity department, the hospital registered zero maternal deaths in the fourth quarter. Our caesarian sections are now being done within 30 minutes, which is an improvement. Our stock status at the pharmacy has since risen from 40 percent to 60 percent. We have also registered a lot of progress in our laboratory, as some tests, which were being referred to other places, are now being done here, despite being short-staffed in that department.
“We expect other specialist doctors to join this hospital as we go into the future, as our institution continues to grow. We also carried out a client satisfaction survey, where we sought the opinion of the patients on how we operate here. Satisfaction of our clients, the patients, is now hovering over 80 percent. We hope to build on the positive momentum as we go into 2026 and beyond,” said Dr Karembo.
