TWO serving Mozambican police officers have appeared before the Mutare Magistrates’ Court facing charges of unlawful dealing in dangerous drugs after they were allegedly found in possession of methamphetamine.
The duo was denied bail, and remanded in custody pending finalisation of the matter.
The accused, Felizardo Fernando Ernesto (48) and Aviso Julio Aviso (43), both Mozambican nationals appeared before Mr Honest Musiyiwa, charged with unlawful dealing in dangerous drugs, namely methamphetamine, as defined in Section 156(1)(a)(c) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 09:23], read together with provisions of the Dangerous Drugs Act (Amendment) Regulations, 2024.
The two pleaded not guilty to the charges and are being represented by Mr Nyasha Mukonyora of Gonese and Ndlovu Legal Practitioners.
The State, led by prosecutor, Ms Sandra Mlambo, said the accused are serving police officers in Mozambique, stationed at Manica District Headquarters.
Ms Mlambo said on November 29, 2025 at around 6am, detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Mutare, received information that one of the accused persons was in possession of dangerous drugs, which had allegedly been imported from Mozambique for resale in Zimbabwe.
Acting on the tip-off, CID officers proceeded to Meikles Park Car Park in Mutare’s CBD. Upon arrival, they allegedly found one of the accused seated in the front passenger seat of a parked motor vehicle.
“The detectives identified themselves and conducted a search, which led to the recovery of four transparent sachets containing methamphetamine from the accused’s right trouser pocket. He reportedly failed to produce any documentation authorising him to possess the drug in Zimbabwe and was subsequently arrested,” said Ms Mlambo.
The recovered substance was sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory, where forensic scientist confirmed that it tested positive for methamphetamine. The drug weighed 41,80 grammes and had an estimated street value of US$418.
The accused were denied bail and remanded in custody. The matter is scheduled for judgment on January 30.
