THE United Nations has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 through accelerated implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Speaking at the Second Bi-Annual High-Level SDGs Steering Committee meeting in Harare today, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Mr Edward Kallon said the meeting was a pivotal platform to “usher in the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2)” and create a clear pathway for achieving Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 of becoming an upper middle-income economy.
“I look at this meeting as one that not only signals the transition into NDS2, but also creates an opportunity to accelerate implementation of the SDGs in Zimbabwe,” he said.
“Our shared task is to turn strategy into rapid, visible and inclusive results for all Zimbabweans.”
Mr Kallon said there were six key areas which were important for driving SDG progress.
These include energy access and security, digital connectivity, food and land systems, urban infrastructure and mobility, industrialisation and human capital development.
He hailed the Government for strides in renewable energy and digital transformation, citing the establishment of the Zimbabwe National Renewable Energy Fund and the Grid Electrification Fund as strong examples of innovation.
“These initiatives show Zimbabwe’s readiness to attract private investment, promote blended finance and expand access to affordable energy,” said Mr Kallon.
“A consolidated national investment prospectus, aligned with the six transitions, will make Zimbabwe’s projects bankable, attract blended finance and ensure fiscal sustainability.”

Deputy Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet in charge of Finance, Administration and Human Resources, Mr Zvinechimwe Churu, who chaired the meeting on behalf of Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Martin Rushwaya, echoed the UN’s message of partnership.
He said Zimbabwe had made “notable progress” under the first National Development Strategy (NDS1) and was now poised for “accelerated transformation” under NDS2.
He highlighted the launch of the Open SDGs Data Portal as a landmark achievement that enhanced transparency, evidence-based policymaking and citizen engagement.
“This portal positions Zimbabwe among the leading African countries embracing open data for SDG reporting,” said Mr Churu. “Under the Second Republic, President Mnangagwa has repeatedly underscored that no one and no place should be left behind.”
Mr Churu commended development partners for their continued financial and technical support, which contributed to visible improvements in healthcare, education, social protection and gender equality.
“Life expectancy has improved, maternal mortality has declined and more women are now participating in local governance, evidence that SDG-driven programmes are changing lives,” he said.
