Residents of Nkulumane Constituency have pledged to continue development projects initiated by their late Member of Parliament (MP), Desire Moyo, as part of his lasting legacy.
Moyo, who died last Friday in a car accident near Shangani along the Harare-Bulawayo highway, had already secured funding under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and transferred it to the service provider before his passing.
A memorial service to celebrate his life was held at Nkulumane Hall on Tuesday, attended by residents, fellow parliamentarians, senators, civil society representatives, and community members.
On Wednesday morning, Moyo’s body was taken to his homestead in Mbembesi, with the funeral convoy making brief stops at Nkulumane Hall and his constituency office for residents to pay their respects.CDF Committee Chairperson, Wingley Nhliziyo, praised Moyo’s leadership and transparency in managing constituency affairs.
“There is a lot that he did in the constituency and more he was yet to do in line with his vision of making Nkulumane great again,” said Nhliziyo.
“We will finish what we started as a committee. The funds were disbursed and transferred to the CDF bank, all the projects will be completed.”
He described Moyo as a trustworthy leader who ensured residents were kept informed about public funds and ongoing projects.
“He showed trustworthiness to the people who sent him. For the first time, residents knew that the CDF funds had been disbursed. We appreciate him for being transparent,” he said.
Moyo’s assistant, Khumbulani Malinga, also assured residents that all development projects promised by the late MP would go ahead.
“Where he promised boreholes, they will be drilled. The leadership he selected remains in place, and we will continue his vision. Even though he is gone, we are well taken care of orphans,” said Malinga.
Andrew Ndlovu, Chairperson of the Nkulumane Constituency Development Committee, commended Moyo for uniting residents across political lines.
“I was a ZAPU candidate, and others came from ZANU-PF and CCC, but we all worked together for development,” he said.
“We were non-partisan and wish other constituencies could learn from us.”
Ward 23 Councillor Mmeli Moyo echoed the sentiment, saying the late MP’s message of unity would live on.
“Nkulumane has people from ZANU-PF, CCC, ZAPU and others, but we are one people. That was Moyo’s message, and we will continue with it,” he said.
