THE National University of Science and Technology (Nust) on Thursday bid farewell to seven students selected to participate in the 2026 Student Mobility Exchange Programme in Latvia and Sweden, marking another milestone in the university’s growing international engagement.

The exchange programme, which is part of Nust’s strategic partnerships with leading European institutions, is designed to promote academic collaboration, cultural exchange and leadership development among students.

Addressing the students during a send-off ceremony, Nust Vice-Chancellor Professor Mqhele Dlodlo urged them to act as ambassadors of Zimbabwe, the university and their families during their studies abroad.
“Your conduct abroad reflects not only on yourselves but also on your families, the university and the country. You must therefore represent Zimbabwe with professionalism, discipline and pride,” said Prof Dlodlo.

He said the exchange programme goes beyond academic learning, offering students an opportunity for personal growth, self-discovery and exposure to diverse cultures.
“The primary discovery is discovering who you really are. How you respond to new environments will define you. This programme was built on strong partnerships between Nust and leading European institutions, creating pathways for innovation, discovery and self-awareness,” said Prof Dlodlo.

He encouraged the students to approach the experience with humility, curiosity and openness.
“You are travelling to learn and exchange knowledge, not to impose your own perspectives. Exposure to cultures that value excellence, integrity, sustainability and collaborative decision-making is essential for leadership development,” said Prof Dlodlo.

The Vice-Chancellor also warned the students to prepare for challenges such as cold weather, academic pressure and culture shock, describing them as opportunities for growth rather than setbacks.
“These challenges are not signs of weakness. They are stepping stones towards growth and transformation,” he said.

Prof Dlodlo said the university expects the students to share their experiences upon returning home and mentor fellow students, adding that Nust staff would also benefit from the students’ international exposure.

The students selected for the exchange programme will pursue studies in various disciplines. Tichaona Majona, who is studying advanced qualitative studies, global sustainable development, and gender, power and institutions, will attend Uppsala University in Sweden.

Alfonce Muzatha, who will study environment and climate change, basic Swedish, and heritage and environment, will also undertake his programme in Sweden at Visby, Uppsala University.

Sidumile Dumoluhle Ncube will study business economics at the University of Riga in Latvia, while journalism and media studies student Muzingaye Thaka will enrol at Riga Technical University in Latvia under the Faculty of Economic Engineering.

Aisha Mabika will pursue a Master of Science degree in accounting and finance in Riga, while Tanaka Zinyengere will study for a Bachelor of Science in information management technology. Cathrine Phiri will undertake business computer science courses.

The students expressed excitement and optimism ahead of their departure.
“I am excited to study at Uppsala University and experience Swedish culture. This programme is a chance for me to grow academically and personally,” said Majona.

Muzatha said he was looking forward to exploring the link between environmental sustainability and cultural heritage, while learning Swedish and gaining new perspectives.

For Thaka, studying in Riga represents an opportunity to broaden his understanding of journalism and media studies.
“I am eager to learn in a new environment and bring fresh ideas back home,” he said.
