MORE than 480 prisoners were released yesterday from Harare Central Prison after having sentences cut under the Presidential Clemency, expressing their heartfelt gratitude to President Mnangagwa for granting them an earlier second chance.
The high walls of the prison reverberated with jubilant whistles and ululation as 484 prisoners celebrated their newfound freedom, describing President Mnangagwa as loving.
“VaMnangagwa huchi. Murichibaba, munerudo. Tinotenda nekutipa umwe mukana,” they chanted.
Spencer Chaparapadza, one of the recipients of the Presidential Clemency who was serving 48 months for gender-based violence, encouraged other men to abandon abusive behaviour.
“I want to thank our President for this early release, allowing me a chance to rebuild my life for my family and my country. I had served just 21 months for a mistake I deeply regret. We must respect our wives, and to all men out there, please stop domestic violence,” he said.
Brian Muzondiwa, who was released after having his sentence for unlawful entry shortened, shared how his time in prison equipped him with valuable skills.
“I have learned to pray and become a true worshipper. I urge everyone to be God-fearing. I am grateful to the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services for preparing me for life outside,” he said.
Chandafira Chigo, who served nine months for assault, said: “We are immensely thankful for what our father and President has done for us.
“This marks a new life for me, and I believe society will accept my reintegration. The skills I acquired through rehabilitation programmes will guide me in living peacefully among my fellow citizens.”
The staggered release programme will continue, with an additional 66 inmates scheduled to be freed in the near future.
Prisons in Harare Metropolitan Province released 960 inmates, while Bulawayo Metropolitan released 392, Masvingo 384, Midlands 501 and other regions contributed to a national total of 4 305 inmates released under the terms of the clemency order shortening sentences for some crimes.
