Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander-in-Chief, President Mnangagwa, has commended the partnership between Midlands State University and the Zimbabwe Military Academy (ZMA) in training officer cadets, stating that such collaboration will greatly contribute to instilling skills and discipline in soldiers to serve their country with professionalism.

President Mnangagwa made these remarks today while delivering his keynote address during the graduation of 105 officer cadets at the ZMA in Gweru.

“I extend my gratitude to Midlands State University for providing academic guidance to the Academy by offering the Diploma programme. Synergies of this kind assure us that graduating officer cadets from this institution will enter service carrying both the sword and the book, alongside the discipline, patriotism, and loyalty of a soldier.

“With these multifaceted skills, the officers are well-positioned to safeguard the sovereignty of Zimbabwe and help advance the development of our nation,” said President Mnangagwa.

“The Zimbabwe Military Academy is urged to tap into the University’s vast areas of expertise to promote professional development, innovation, and ingenuity.”

However, he also urged ZMA to investigate the circumstances surrounding the high drop-out rate of regular officer cadet trainees, which saw the number falling from an initial 170 to the 105 who managed to complete the course after others withdrew for various reasons.

“The course commenced with an enrolment of 170 cadets. I challenge ZMA to reflect on the factors that contributed to this remarkably high number of drop-outs and others failing to meet the requirements of the course,” President Mnangagwa said.

“A total of 105 cadets met the expected training standards. I particularly applaud the 20 female officer cadets for standing shoulder to shoulder with their fellow cadets and attaining this milestone.”

“The wide range of subjects covered during this course forms a solid foundation upon which graduates must build their careers and deepen their understanding of an ever-evolving military domain. Subjects relating to command and leadership, professional warfare, law and justice operations, administration, and military law remain crucial to the development of competent military officers.

“Graduates have been equipped with the requisite tactical, regimental, and administrative knowledge, as well as the necessary expertise to serve with utmost professionalism in the Zimbabwe Defence Forces,” said President Mnangagwa.
