REDCLIFF Municipality is setting sights on constructing its own water treatment plant in a move aimed at addressing persistent water shortages in the town.
The Mayor, Councillor Vincent Shangwa Masiiwa revealed the development during a recent full council meeting held at the Redcliff Municipality Civic Centre. He said the proposed plant, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year, will significantly improve water supply and reduce the town’s long-standing dependence on Kwekwe City Council.
“Plans to construct our own water treatment plant are underway. The project is slated for completion by the end of the current year,” said Clr Masiiwa.
He said the project proposal is being processed by the Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency (Zida) before it is submitted to Cabinet for approval.
“The documentation for our water treatment plant is now with Zida and will then be taken to Cabinet. Our hope is that the project will kick off this year so that by 2027, we begin to see real relief for residents,” he said.
Redcliff relies on Kwekwe City Council for its water supply, a situation the Mayor described as unsustainable due to recurring power outages at pumping stations, frequent pipe bursts and outstanding debts.
As a result, some suburbs, particularly Torwood and parts of Redcliff, often experience water shortages lasting more than two weeks, forcing residents to rely on boreholes for their daily needs.
Clr Masiiwa said the proposed treatment plant will give the town greater control over its water supply and help address one of the most persistent service delivery challenges affecting residents.
“We believe that the proposed treatment plant will give us greater control over water supply and mark a turning point in addressing one of the most persistent service delivery challenges,” he said.
