ROBBER Gift Mwaudzeni from Epworth has been sentenced to an effective 15 years in prison after being convicted of two counts of armed robbery.
Harare regional magistrate Ms Learnomore Mapiye yesterday handed down the sentence for his role in a violent robbery that occurred along Harare-Domboshava Road, leaving two victims traumatised.
Initially, Mwaudzeni was sentenced to 10 years for the first count and an additional 10 years for the second count.
However, four years of the sentence were suspended on condition of good behaviour, while another year was suspended on condition he restitutes the stolen property.
The court also ordered that a recovered iPhone 11 Pro Max be returned to its rightful owner.
Prosecutor Kelvin Munyimi told the court that on July 20, 2025, at around 8:30 pm, the complainant, Admire Muyewa, a self-employed driver from Mungate Village, Chief Chinamhora, offered Mwaudzeni and his two accomplices transportation from Harare to Domboshava.
Along the way, Muyewa picked up his nephew, Richard Mkomba, at the Sam Levy bus stop.
However, at the 27-kilometre mark on the Harare-Domboshava road, Mwaudzeni produced a pistol and ordered Muyewa to stop. Out of fear, Muyewa complied.
Mwaudzeni and his accomplices tied Muyewa with shoelaces and forced him into the boot of his own vehicle.
The gang then drove the vehicle, searched Muyewa, and stole his Huawei P30 cellphone and $105 in cash.
The robbers dumped Muyewa in a bushy area in Zhanda Village, Chief Chinamhora, before abandoning his Toyota IST at Munemo Village.
Further investigations revealed that the accused also robbed Mkomba of an iPhone 11 Pro Max and $20 in cash.
The stolen iPhone was sold to a series of buyers, eventually reaching Brian Tichaona Duma.
Duma activated the device and received a notification from the iCloud “Find My Phone” feature, alerting him that the phone was stolen.
He contacted Muyewa, who notified the police.
Detectives acted swiftly, recovering the phone and arresting Mwaudzeni at his residence in Overspill, Epworth.
A search of his room uncovered a 9mm AK blank pistol and four live rounds hidden in a satchel.
The total value of the stolen property was US$300, of which US$280 was recovered.
