The Southern African Development Community (Sadc) has reinforced its commitment for the right to self-determination by the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) through the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the bloc’s headquarters in Gaborone, Botswana.
The MoU was signed by Executive Secretary Mr Elias Magosi and Ambassador of the Sahrawi to Botswana, Mr Bah El Mad Abdellah.
It seeks to implement the decisions approved by the Sadc Heads of State and Government in August 2019.
“The signing of this MoU is a testament to Sadc’s strong commitment to supporting SADR or Western Sahara in achieving the fundamental right to determine its own future,” said Mr Magosi.
He also noted that the Sadc region will not neglect the plight of the Sahrawi people, their daily struggle for survival and their hope of exercising their right to self-determination.
Western Sahara remains the only territory in Africa under colonial rule as inscribed in the United Nations and decolonisation list of non-self-governing territories.
At the commemorative event of the Southern Africa Liberation Day in March, Sadc Chairperson President Mnangagwa said the region will always remember the people of Western Sahara who are being denied the right to determine their own destiny.
“Africa will not be free until the Western Sahara is liberated, free and independent,” President Mnangagwa said.
Ambassador El Mad Abdellah commended the agreement as an important step towards enhancing collaboration, unity and shared principles between the two parties.
He emphasised that the MoU signifies a common commitment to expanding collaboration and supporting the Sahrawi people’s rights and aspirations while voicing confidence in Sadc’s ability to harness its history of anti-colonial efforts to support the Sahrawi cause.
