The Mudzi Rural District Council has petitioned the Provincial Mining Commissioner for Mashonaland East to intervene in a mounting dispute between the local community and Futeng Mine, following reports that the mine has begun operations inside the premises of Rwamba Primary School.
In a formal letter of complaint dated December 2, 2025, the local authority challenged the mining company’s claim that the school grounds fall within its legal mining concession.
The council’s intervention follows a wave of protests from parents and local leaders, who fear for the safety of pupils and staff.
“We write to formally request your office’s intervention and clarification regarding the boundaries of Futeng Mine in Rwamba area,” reads part of the letter.
“It has come to our attention that Futeng Mine is claiming that Rwamba Primary School lies within their mine claim.
“Consequently, mining operations are being conducted in and around the school premises. This situation has raised serious concerns within the community, as the school has been in existence well before the establishment of the mine.”
The Council also requested the Commissioner to clarify whether Rwamba Primary School legitimately falls within the mine claim.
“The ongoing mining activities have triggered a community outcry, with parents, guardians and local leaders expressing grave concern over the safety and welfare of pupils and teachers. In light of this, we kindly request your office to provide the official boundary demarcation of Futeng Mine in Rwamba area.”
For ease of reference, the council also attached a map of Rwamba Primary School to assist the office in verifying the boundary demarcations.
Earlier, the community had warned that the mining operations could lead to environmental degradation, potentially contaminating local water sources and creating health hazards from dust, noise, and other pollutants.
The community also questioned whether Futeng Investments holds a valid Environmental Impact Assessment certificate and expressed shock if any authorisation allows mining on school premises.
According to the petition, open-cast mining is taking place close to classrooms, staff houses and school fields.
