POLICE have warned the public against taking photographs or videos at road traffic accident scenes, urging citizens to prioritise saving lives and ensuring safety instead of chasing social media content.

The call follows a recent fatal accident involving the Mujuru family in Masvingo, where six family members lost their lives.

The tragedy has triggered widespread outrage after disturbing images and videos from the scene circulated online.

In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said members of the public must act responsibly by rendering assistance to victims rather than recording graphic content.

“The ZRP urges Zimbabweans to prioritise rendering assistance to victims of road traffic accidents, such as promptly notifying emergency services and offering first aid where possible, rather than capturing photographs or videos of horrific accident scenes and sharing them on social media.

“The law will take its course on anyone who will be found taking photographs or videos of accident scenes. A case in point is a recent road traffic accident involving the Ronald Mujuru family in Masvingo.”

Comm Nyathi also warned that crowding accident scenes not only disrespects victims, but increases the risk of further tragedies.

This concern was underscored by another fatal incident which occurred on April 3, 2026, at around 9:10pm at the 57-kilometre peg along the Bulawayo–Beitbridge Road in Mawabeni, Umzingwane, where seven bystanders were killed after being struck by a truck at an accident scene.

Police said the victims had gathered following an earlier collision involving three vehicles — a Nissan March, Toyota Probox and Toyota Baby Quantum.

The Nissan March, which had three passengers, was hit from behind by the Toyota Probox, forcing both vehicles to stop in the roadway.

Drivers and passengers disembarked to assess the damage. A Toyota Baby Quantum then approached at high speed and struck several people at the scene, injuring three.

Moments later, a truck ploughed into the stationary vehicles and pedestrians, killing five people on the spot, while two others later died at Esigodini District Hospital.

Police have identified some of the victims as Khumbulani Tshuma (32) of Bekezela, Filabusi; Senzangakhona Moyo (43) of Old Lobengula, Bulawayo; Victor Moyo (39) of Pumula South, Bulawayo; Dumoluhle Ncube (30) of Pumula South, Bulawayo; and Fundani Moyo (53) of Mbonjeni Village, Esibomvu.
