A HEARTBREAKING incident has unfolded in Munyanyi Village, under Chief Chimombe in Buhera, where a 37-year-old woman is suspected to have taken her own life by diving into a deep water well where she drowned.
Acting Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, identified the deceased as Varaidzo Mubaiwa.
He said the tragedy occurred on Saturday at around 2pm.
Ass Insp Chinyoka said Mubaiwa had made an initial attempt to end her life by diving onto the lane of oncoming vehicles along the Chivhu–Nyazura Highway.
Fortunately, the motorists were able to react swiftly and managed to avoid hitting her.
Later that day, Varaidzo went to the garden well of 62-year-old Noah Takaendesa in Munyanyi Village, where she dived into the well and drowned. The incident was witnessed by 17-year-old Leeroy Mubaiwa.
The matter was reported at ZRP Dorowa and police investigations revealed that Mubaiwa’s actions were not an isolated incident.
Instead, it was part of a recurring struggle with suicidal thoughts that she had been battling since the start of the month.
The body was transported to Murambinda Mission Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, Ass Insp Chinyoka has urged members of the public to take mental health concerns seriously by seeking timely counselling and professional support, and to remain attentive to signs of emotional distress within their families and communities.
