A 27-year-old man from Insiza in Matabeleland South allegedly attacked a fellow villager leading to his death the following day.

Prince Mpofu of Village 2 in Fort Rixon pleaded not guilty to culpable homicide charges when he appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Mark Dzira last Tuesday.

A witness, Elton Mpofu, told the court that the now deceased, Gilbert Mguni, was heavily intoxicated and aggressive on the day in question.

“I saw Mpofu punch Mguni on the forehead with his fist once,” he said.

“He fell and lost consciousness for about five minutes.”

In his defence, Mpofu questioned inconsistencies in the witness statements.

“I deny the charges because when I left him, he was alive, seated, and with other people,”  he said.

The court heard that on February 13, 2019, at 5pm, Mguni was drinking at a local pool shade when an altercation broke out between him and Mpofu.

It is alleged that Mpofu struck Mguni once on the forehead with a fist, causing him to fall backwards and lose consciousness. He later regained consciousness. The following morning, Mguni was found dead at the Pioneer Block Service Clinic.

A report made to the police led to Mpofu’s arrest.
