Vice President Dr Kembo Mohadi yesterday officially commissioned a new two-storey, 14-classroom block at Beitbridge Government Primary School, in an initiative aimed at enhancing educational facilities, especially in areas facing infrastructural challenges.
He also donated 15 laptops, interactive boards and Starlink internet services.
Such technological advancements are set to provide learners with essential digital tools that facilitate modern learning environments, crucial for preparing them for the demands of the 21st century.
VP Mohadi has played a pivotal role in the refurbishment and upgrade of several schools in Matabeleland South province, with his recent work being at Mtetengwe Primary School in Beitbridge, which included the installation of a mini-solar power plant and the establishment of a computer laboratory.
The addition of boreholes to support a nutrition garden demonstrates a commitment to not only education, but to the overall well-being of learners. VP Mohadi visited Beitbridge Mission Primary School, where he is an alumnus, to drill solar-powered boreholes aimed at developing a nutrition garden and donate computers. This school is noteworthy for being the only institution in the area with boarding facilities for children with disabilities.
His visit to Beitbridge was notably timed to coincide with the celebration of his birthday and a two-day sports gala that featured 12 teams drawn from various constituencies in Matabeleland South.
Emphasising the role of sports in fostering community spirit, VP Mohadi spoke on the importance of engaging the youth through physical activities.
“Beitbridge Primary has long been a beacon of learning in this border town. Rapid population growth, however, created overcrowding and hot seating, compromising the quality of education,” he said.
“This new block ends the challenge and signals a transformation that aligns with Vision 2030, our blueprint for an upper middle- income, industrialised Zimbabwe and with Education 5.0 which fuses heritage, innovation and competence.
“Our achievement also advances the Millennium Development Goals, particularly, quality education, well-ventilated classrooms that support inclusive learning, gender equality safe spaces that encourage girls’ participation in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).”
VP Mohadi said the model to densify schools will be replicated across Matabeleland South province. He also commended the school development committee and parents from the school for successfully implementing the project, which began in 2021.
Also toured by the VP was the expanded Oakleigh House, a private school that has densified classrooms.
Matabeleland South Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Cde Albert Nguluvhe said the completion of the school project was testament to what Zimbabweans achieve if they share a vision and pool resources towards one goal.
Provincial education director Ms Beatrice Manjere, who spoke on behalf of Permanent Secretary for Primary and Secondary Education Mr Moses Mhike said: “We are happy to see great infrastructure development at this school, where the whole community took up the initiative to improve the state of learning facilities.”
She said the foundation has been laid to shape the future of children and the entire nation. Chief Tshitaudze of Beitbridge commended VP Mohadi for his donation of computers to the school, which he said will enhance e-learning.
“We are grateful for such a gesture from the Vice President, who has donated critical equipment in the form of computers and a Starlink kit that is essential in modern learning,” he said.
