A Glen View woman accused of attempting to kill her husband by serving him poisoned food and scalding him with cooking oil appeared in court yesterday.
Abigirl Rusape, who is facing charges of attempted murder, stood before Harare regional magistrate Mrs Marehwanazvo Gofa.
She was granted bail of US$50 and was remanded out of custody to July 2.
Prosecutor Mr Rufaro Chonzi told the court that on the night of May 24, at around 9pm, the complainant, Ezra Rusape (36), returned home from work to find his wife, Abigirl, at their residence.
Abigirl allegedly served Ezra a plate of rice suspected to have been laced with a poisonous substance.
While eating, Ezra reportedly detected a strong smell resembling paraffin coming from the food.
He questioned his wife about it, but she dismissed his concerns and urged him to continue eating, insisting the food was good.
Shortly afterwards, Ezra began experiencing severe stomach pains.
The couple went to bed, but the situation escalated during the night.
The court heard that Abigirl woke up while Ezra was fast asleep, locked the bedroom door from the outside, and proceeded to the kitchen, where she boiled cooking oil.
Ezra later woke up to the sound of his child crying and realised Abigirl was no longer in the room.
He managed to open the locked door and stepped outside, only to be met by Abigirl, who allegedly scalded his face, chest, stomach, and left hand.
Ezra sustained severe burns from the attack.
He was rushed to CITMED Hospital in Chitungwiza, where he was admitted and is currently receiving treatment for his injuries.
