ZIMBABWE intends to tap into China’s multi-billion-dollar medical equipment industry to plug gaps that currently exist in the health sector, Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Owen Ncube has said.
He made the remarks after touring the China Medical Device Remanufacturing Project in Shanghai on the sidelines of the China International Import Expo (CIIE), which opened on November 5 and runs until November 10.
“The People’s Republic of China remains Zimbabwe’s biggest investment partner, creating jobs, incomes and attendant technology transfer in critical sectors such as mining, agriculture, manufacturing, construction and tourism,” Minister Ncube said.
He credited the bold and strategic policy decisions adopted under the leadership of President Mnangagwa for opening up the economy, strengthening public sector reforms, accelerating the ease of doing business and operationalising the devolution and decentralisation framework.
“This has effectively accelerated health delivery in our motherland, Zimbabwe. Pursuant to this development trajectory, several clinics and hospitals have been established in all districts under the highly successful devolution and decentralisation programme, complemented by the private sector and local authorities,” he said.
This expansion, he said, has created growing demand for medical equipment, hospital consumables and skilled personnel.
During the tour, Minister Ncube observed the wide range of equipment produced by the China Medical Device Remanufacturing Project, from basic apparatus to advanced machinery for specialised departments such as gynaecology, obstetrics, radiology, a cardiac intensive care unit, ultrasound diagnostics and surgery.
“My tour of the China Medical Device Manufacturing Project was indeed an eye-opener,” he said, emphasising the potential for collaboration and technology transfer.
He also invited Chinese investors to explore opportunities in the Midlands province.
“I gladly invite you to invest in the Midlands province, which offers unlimited opportunities beyond the health sector. The province is ripe for investment in mining, agriculture and manufacturing, in line with the Government’s policy of leaving no one and no place behind.”
This year’s eighth CIIE features 4 108 overseas exhibitors from 155 countries.
