The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) is set to make history with the launch of a radio station at Chikurubi Maximum Prison, the first of its kind in the history of correctional services in Zimbabwe.
This development follows the granting of a broadcasting licence to the correctional service a few months ago.
Acting ZPCS Commissioner-General Social Ndanga confirmed that the station, to be named The Bridge Radio, will broadcast from a building that formerly housed the gallows used for prisoners on the death row. The building became vacant after the abolition of the death penalty.
The Bridge Radio is expected to reach an estimated 40-kilometre radius from the maximum prison, allowing the station to serve not only inmates but also nearby communities.
The announcement was made during a visit by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Mrs Vimbai Nyemba, to Chikurubi Maximum Prison.
Her visit focused on engaging with inmates who were on death row and have since been resentenced following the abolition of the death penalty.
Others have been moved to Bulawayo and Masvingo for resentencing.
Mrs Nyemba also sought to assess their feelings about the development and to establish whether any had appealed against their new sentences or raised other concerns.
