THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has dismissed reports alleging that senior officers have been stealing food rations intended for junior officers.

In light of these claims, the ZRP is calling on anyone with credible information to approach Commissioner General Stephen Mutamba directly.

In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi announced that an investigation has been launched to ascertain the truth behind the media allegations.

He specifically referenced a story published in a local daily newspaper titled, “ZRP bosses steal rations: Juniors”, adding that the Commissioner-General was not aware of such misconduct.

“The Commissioner-General is therefore frantically trying to verify the allegations,” said Comm Nyathi.

He reassured police officers and the public that strict measures have been put in place to prevent any abuse of the rations facility, emphasising the importance of maintaining integrity within the force.

Comm Nyathi expressed concern over the possibility that some officers may be attempting to undermine the command’s efforts to improve the welfare of police officers.

He noted that tampering with the ration system could be part of a broader agenda by certain individuals or groups who are dissatisfied with the police hierarchy’s initiatives.

“The ZRP command is privy to information that some individuals and groups are not pleased with the reforms being implemented in terms of members’ welfare. They may be trying to obstruct or interfere with the rations meant for police officers.”

To promote transparency and accountability, he urged anyone with credible and verifiable information regarding these allegations to visit the Police General Headquarters and report directly to the Commissioner-General.

Comm Nyathi said confidentiality would be guaranteed for those willing to come forward. In addition, he appealed to the media to be responsible, urging journalists to remain objective in their coverage of security issues.

Comm Nyathi said sensational reporting could lead to unnecessary alarm and confusion among police officers at a time when the Command is working closely with the Government to enhance the welfare of its officers.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police appeals to the media to be objective in reporting on security issues and avoid causing alarm and despondency in the country’s uniformed services at a time when commanders are working closely with the Government to address members’ welfare,” he said.
