THE Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has received a major boost in its anti-poaching operations following a donation of field equipment from Econet Wireless for rangers operating in the Zambezi and Victoria Falls National Parks.

The donation, officially handed over in Victoria Falls on Tuesday, is expected to strengthen frontline conservation efforts by improving ranger mobility, safety and operational readiness.

The consignment included 40 two-man tents, 40 sleeping bags, 40 patrol boots, 40 webbing belts and 40 torches.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, ZimParks director-general, Edison Gandiwa, commended Econet for supporting wildlife conservation initiatives.

“This timely contribution strengthens our frontline capability in safeguarding wildlife, preserving our natural resources and ensuring the safety of both staff and visitors,” he said.

Prof Gandiwa said the donated equipment would significantly improve working conditions for rangers who often endure harsh terrain and unpredictable weather conditions while conducting anti-poaching patrols.

“Better patrol gear translates into faster response times and more confident patrols. Scheduling and rotation will become more effective, reducing fatigue among rangers,” he said.

Prof Gandiwa added that enhanced ranger capacity would improve protection of endangered wildlife species, reduce human-wildlife conflict and strengthen tourism experiences within and around the national parks.

The partnership between ZimParks and Econet has also extended beyond conservation work, with park rangers previously supporting the annual Econet Victoria Falls Marathon as both participants and security personnel.

Econet Wireless area manager for Matabeleland North Province, Dr Munyaradzi Chikwama, said the donation was in recognition of the support ZimParks continues to provide during the marathon events.

“Beyond athletes running inside the park, ZimParks continues to offer support in the form of personnel,” he said.

ZimParks senior ranger for operations, Mr Lenious Ncube, said the equipment would greatly assist rangers working on the frontline of conservation.

“A safer, more welcoming park environment encourages responsible tourism and broader local engagement. The visibility of corporate support also helps raise awareness and inspire others to contribute towards conservation efforts,” he said.

The donation comes at a time when Zimbabwe continues to intensify efforts to combat poaching and preserve biodiversity, which remains critical to the country’s tourism industry and environmental sustainability.
