GURUVE rapist Anymore Zvitsva will spend, at least, 89 years in jail in the latest tough sanctions handed to criminals this year.

So far, seven armed robbers have already been hit with combined 785 years in prison.

Zvitsva, who pleaded guilty to ten counts of rape, robbery and attempted murder, faces further sanctions at the High Court where he will be tried for a number of homicide cases.

He was sentenced to 89 years in jail yesterday in the latest demonstration of a tough reaction to rapists and armed robbers this year.

In the most high-profile cases, three armed robbers were sentenced to a combined 375 years in jail.

Vusumuzi Bhebhe, 25, and Yasin Joseph, 21, were sentenced to 125 years each at the Masvingo Regional Magistrate Court.

Four members of an armed robbery gang have been jailed for a combined 328 years following a spate of armed robberies they committed in one night at a business centre in Murehwa.

They were sentenced to 82 years in jail each.

A Murehwa magistrate convicted Charles Munyaradzi Dhokotera (42), Donald Travolta Matunhu (28), Mayor Sibanda (34) and Bothwell Kamwendo (40) of nine counts of armed robbery.

Colonel Madzima (24) who was facing similar charges was acquitted.

If one takes into account Zvitsva’s sentence, it means that the eight criminals have, collectively, been handed prison sentences of 792 years.

However, in the cases of Dhokotera, Matunhu, Sibanda and Kamwendo, the court suspended 10 years on condition of good behaviour for each of the gang members.

Another year will be suspended if they restitute US$407 each while the court ordered some of the sentences on the separate counts to run concurrently, leaving them to serve an effective 44 years.

Yesterday, all eyes were on Zvitsva, who is also a multiple homicide suspect in over 25 murders.

He was sentenced to 89 years in jail after being convicted of ten counts of rape, robbery and attempted murder.

Harare regional magistrate, Francis Mapfumo, ruled that all the counts were committed in aggravating circumstances.

“All the counts were committed in aggravating circumstances as the rape and attempted murder cases were committed in aggravating circumstances using dangerous weapons and violence.

“The offences were pre-meditated and he was pouncing on vulnerable victims making well calculated moves before attacking them.

“He subjected victims to the shameless acts and after raping them he attempted to kill them.

“Rape dehumanised and traumatised the victims and exposed them to sexually transmitted diseases as he was not using protection,” said Mapfumo.

Of the ten charges, five are attempted murder, four are rape and a count of robbery.

The court heard that on October 9 last year, the complainant Providence Maruza 27 was sleeping in her room at Ditwi Village, Chiwe Farm, Raffingora and her door was unlocked.

Zvitsva was armed with an Okapi knife and snare wire, pushed the door open and gained entry into the room.

While inside, he threatened to kill Maruza if ever she screamed then tied her hands and legs using a wire.

He dragged her towards the thicket of Dangemuri Mountains where he raped her once.

After the act he stabbed her once on the back and neck and left the scene.

On October 27, Zvitsva while armed with a machete, broke into Reginet Sango’s homestead at Mudhindo Village, Chief Bepura, Kachuta, Guruve.

Sango 62, was fetching water at a local borehole.

Zvitsva produced a machete from his jacket and demanded to have sexual intercourse with her.

She attempted to flee into nearby bushes but Zvitsva pursued and caught up with her.

He struck her once on the head and once on the left arm with the machete, causing her to fall down.

He then raped her once without protection and strangled her with a wire around the neck before leaving her unconscious at the scene.

On the same day, Zvitsva attacked Brian Ngoshi, who was walking on foot from Kachuta Business Centre going home.

He used a machete to strike Ngoshi twice on the head, causing him to fall onto the road.

Zvitsva proceeded to strangle Ngoshi with a wire around the neck until he lost consciousness.

Thereafter, he searched him and stole one cigarette lighter and one packet of Madison cigarettes.

Zvitsva left Ngoshi unconscious at the scene and was assisted by a passerby who alerted his aunt.
